There's a lot of uncertainty. Trainers aren't sure whether their owners will put forth significant $$ on Ontario sired inparticular because no one knows how badly purses will be affected. I'd feel a lot better if I was waiting to sell three KY sired yearlings as opposed to the three Ontario sired that I do have

I'm betting that there will be a lot of trailers with broodmares heading down from Canada to NY to foal for 2013.

"old timers" warned about tying racing and the slots together.
They preached that if racing got addicted to the slots money
it would be bad news in the end.
How can this be fixed? I feel sorry for our Canadian neighbors
and the mess this has really created. So many horses and people
make their living at racing.
Is this fore shadowing of what is to come in the states?

I agree on both counts. The gambling interests are not identical to the overall racing interests and the industry is a huge revenue producer - everywhere. It will either be a whole new business plan for racing, or the whole thing is threatened. There will be US states that will want to follow suit.

I expect the sale will be bad, at least for the Ontario sired horses. I'm not selling and I certainly won't be buying either.

A few years back I stopped sending mares to KY to be bred, the ONT SIRED program looked like the way to go. We were finally getting nice stallions to breed to and things were looking good as far as I could see. Nobody saw this one coming.

Now I have weanlings, yearlings, two year olds and three in-foal broodmares at home. No idea what to do next.

If you get your mares to PA before 10/01/2012 they will become resident mares and the foals they drop in PA will be eligible for PABRED status whether you breed back to a PA stallion or not.

Don't know much about LA, NY or NJ programs but do know these foals could also become WVBRED if dropped in WV and the mare is bred back to a WV stallion.

The PA government has already shown an interest in the PABRED money but I think the WVBRED program is on pretty solid ground, except our only grass track is in trouble.

The CTHS has lowered the upset price for the 2012 Yearling Sale from $5000 to only $3000. I expect a huge drop in the average and median prices for this sale. It wouldn't surprise me if this sale ceases to exist in the next year or two.

Sellers and consignors.... bring a few boxes of tissues, it is going to be a brutal sale.

Toronto Star article says some predict 'mass euthanasia'. While it might be a bit of an overstatement, clearly the glut of horses will be almost impossible to deal with at least short term.
