We just purchased a super sweet young mare who we are hoping
will produce a possible black/white frame overo for the track.

What percentage of JC registered Thoroughbreds are black?
Somebody bet on the gray!

Sailor Kenshin,

QUEEN LA TURKA is a very good example for comparison with your question. According to the official data, she appears as a "dark bay or brown" mare but the picture betrays something else, possibly or perhaps probably, a black equine. But today, with the wide proliferation of the "dkb/br" nomenclature, the era of "black" Thoroughbreds seems to be enroute to disappear, or at least to become more and more finite each time until... who knows! It is sort of strange in a era when so many darker descendants of the Halo lineage are blossoming around.

Yes, she is dark bay/brown on her JC papers, but she is clearly either
EE, Aa or EE, aa (which we pray for) we will DNA verify her son
and let you know.

I imported a true black TB mare from USA and she produced a very tall and nice black frame overo TB filly this year. Here is her pedigree:

When the dam was registered here they put BLACK in the papers.

Her white friend is Supernatural also by Ellusive Look:

Hi Jorge and Sunday Silence, I wonder where the black came from in this horse? I wish they would have put up a photo for us to see him. I see in his pedigree the first black horse goes all the way back to Kris S. but there are alot of bays, chestnuts and greys.
We will NEVER see another Ruffian......

She is BEAUTIFUL!!! And she has the black on the top by the Halo line, and there is some black in her dam's side. You are lucky to have her!

The bays are actually black with a modifying gene (called Agouti), and the grays might have the gene for black but the grey gene causes the pigment producing cells to stop producing pigment early.

The reason there are more bays than blacks is that the gene that causes bay (it restricts the black color to the legs, mane & tail), is a dominant gene. That means that a horse only needs one copy to be bay, but needs two copies of the recessive, non-bay gene to be black.

And if you mate a black and chestnut, you might get bay because the bay gene only acts on the black color, so chestnuts can carry the gene without showing any evidence.

Gray is a dominant gene, so you only need one copy of the gene to get a gray, no matter what color coat the horse started with.

Does this help?

Aside from the other explanations given above, I have observed that it is quite common for grays to sire or produce black progeny. It happens,
practically, quite often.
