Lentenor, Barbaro's brother, retired

They are talking about stud plans for him. They probably don't realize that there is already a big problem with unwanted horses. Wish they'd geld him and send him to Old Friends.

I think he deserves a shot at stud . . .there is obvious talent in that family top and bottom, and Barbaro never got a chance. If I owned him I'd stand him somewhere too, and I definitely like to be selective about the equine gene pool . . .

one of the three horses actually has a little bit of talent, the one that runs from deep back at a mile. I don't think it's this one

A review of the frosh sire list indicates that his foal's standard starts index is 1.05 which is better than average (1.0). Very small numbers bias this but he's not useless.

the thing that bothers me is....

Barbaro has several full brothers, none of whom even remotely approached him in talent or results. That makes me think that Lentenor's progeny could also be all over the lot in terms of quality and that the bloodline won't breed consistent quality. That said, I can see the headlines on the horse rescues "Barbaro's nephew rescued". The Dynaformers also tend to be hot-headed and hard-to handle and train, so what happens when Lentenor's hot-headed/difficult offspring can't earn their keep running? You have a hot-headed, difficult to train, unwanted horse. And what happens to that type of horse?

I wonder how bad the tendon injury is. He's got a lot of names on his page that would work for jumping.

His female line has been putting out useful listed-class stakes winners for 3 generations. Other than Barbaro, the best performers up to the 3rd dam are a Gr-3 winner in Brazil, Maryland stalwart La Reine's Terms, and a salty Crafty Prospector gelding who ran out $300k in 80 starts. Nothing wrong with that, although nothing especially fantastic about it either.

I wouldn't be surprised if he wound up in South America.

South America is not totally a dumping ground for horses deemed mediocre in USA. Classic winners and champions have stood there through the ages.

You're correct and that implication wasn't intended.

Here's a horse whose best race he ran on soft turf, out of a mare whose 2nd dam established a pretty handy branch in Brazil, and whose surface and distance aptitudes make him better suited to racing in South America than in North America.

Hence, I wouldn't be surprised if he wound up there.

I've been out of the loop for a long while...what's the deal with Nicanor? Whatever happened to him?

There is a blurb in today's BloodHorse saying that Nicanor has been retired to stand at Shamrock Farm in MD, for a fee of $2500.

They're dreaming if they think anybody in the US is going to pay $20k for Americain.

I like the horse too and would like to see him succeed....however there is NO market for dedicated staying stallions in the US, because there are vanishingly few places for staying horses to RACE in the US. France or Japan? Absolutely. India? They'd love him.

Wow, the mold was def. broken when Barbaro was made. Lentenor is not a very good looking horse at all, and I hate to say that. I don't know what kind of stallion he's gonna be, but he's got some short ass legs and I can't believe he's a full to Barbaro, who was not only a champion and may have won the TC had he not broken down, but Barbaro was absolutely gorgeous.

I have some large photos of him and these brothers of his do not look like him at all. I guess that's why there's only one special one here and there.
We will NEVER see another Ruffian......
