Coming to America

Postby jjthoroughbreds » Sat Jun 15, 2013 12:04 pm

Hello Folks this is my 1st post here and I come with cap in hand looking for advice

I'm based in Ireland and currently own a broodmare by Gulch. She is in foal to Famous Name, foaling next March. Famous Name is the winner of 21 races and €1.5million from ages 2-7. http://irishnationalstud.ie/stud/238/famous-name.html

She is the dam of 8 foals

2005 Colt by Dixie Union (USA): placed at 3 in U.S.A.
2006 Colt by Speightstown (USA): 3 wins at 2 and 3 in U.S.A.
2007 Gelding by Empire Maker (USA): 8 wins in Canada
and in U.S.A. and $150,000+ in winnings (last won yesterday at 6yo)
2008 Filly by Vindication (USA): 2 wins at 3, 2011 in U.S.A..
2009 Filly by Street Sense (USA): winner at 3, 2012 in U.S.A.
2010 Colt by Bernstein (USA): Winner this year in Switzerland
2011 Filly by Manduro (GER): In training in Italy yet to run
2012 Colt by Amadeus Wolf (GB): going into training being aimed at Scandinavian Derby next year.

My questions are:
would it be worth my while bringing her next foal to the USA to sell?

Where are the best sales in USA?

How receptive would the Sales companies be to selling foals from outside USA?

Any other advise would be greatly appreciated, I know its a long way off and a lot of work between this and then but I like to hit the ground running

Thanks

Hi, welcome!

I am going to go out on a limb and "assume" you are thinking about the sales in KY, and most likely the ones at Keeneland. The Keeneland yearling sale is far and away the largest one of its kind in the US. Yearlings are ranked into books by, basically, stud fee and dam pedigree/produce.

Something productive you could do is look at last year's catalog for that sale, along with the results. Compare the pedigree and production of your specific mare to the producers bred to stallions similar to the one your mare is bred to (I think E4,000 would rank in with US stallions standing for $5,000 or so) - I think you will find most of those in the latter books. Without knowing exactly which Gulch daughter you have and specifically the names/race records of her offspring I can't really comment - but it costs a LOT to come here to sell...
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....

Hello madelyn, thanks for the welcome and reply.

Under Fire is the mares name

http://www.pedigreequery.com/under+fire3

her offspring are

2005 c. Seminary Ridge (USA) by Dixie Union (USA).
2006 c. Western Fire (USA) by Speightstown (USA):
2007 g. Burning Bush (USA) by Empire Maker (USA)
2008 f. Under Reason (USA) by Vindication (USA)
2009 f. Pedestrian (USA) by Street Sense (USA)
2010 c. Amber Fire (IRE) by Bernstein (USA)
2011 f. unnamed by Manduro (GER).
2012 c. unnamed by Amadeus Wolf (GB).

Her foals have realized up to $400,000 in USA in the past (different financial times) here's links of a few of them racing

Famous Name is widely believed to be vastly under priced for his cover fee on this his 1st year at stud. His retirement on his final win unfortunately didn't receive the media coverage it deserved as it was the same day as Frankel retired. He won or placed in 35 of his 38 starts, only a nose denying him a Group1 victory. An unbelievably sound horse. (I'm starting to sound like his agent but he is one of my all time favorites)

Famous Name cruising to beat Born to Sea (second to chamelot in last years Irish Derby), the half brother of champion sire Galileo and outstanding racehorses Sea The Stars, Sam Bellamy and My Typhoon.

Funny thing. I tried to buy that mare 8 years ago. :)

Short answer to your question: no.

U.S. sales companies are perfectly receptive to offering foals from outside the U.S. It's American buyers who usually aren't interested (unless you happened to be bringing a Frankel, or equivilent.) Your mare has produced winners, but no black type and has, as far as I could see, only one earner of more than 100K. Those high prices for her foals were paid when she was younger and her offspring seemed to be full of potential. Now that she has 8 of racing age and her high-priced offspring have yet to fulfill their perceived promise, her foals will be viewed very differently by buyers.

A spectacular physical will always sell well at a U.S. sale (assuming it vets) but from a U.S buyer's point of view a foal by Famous Name o/o Under Fire will start with several strikes against it. Add in the increased expense of selling in the U.S. (not to mention the difficulty of trying to achieve a fair sale long distance) and I think you'd be better off marketing the foal at home.

Thanks L.B you must have seen something in her  It's just an idea we were toying with. We expect that Famous Name's offspring should be well received here. I believe his low stud fee is due in no small part to the fact that Dermot Weld is on the Board of Directors of the Irish National Stud and the generosity of Khalid Abdullah .

I'd say his low stud fee was due to the fact he couldn't win a G1 and only ever shone at G3 level.

Famous Name was a horse that flattered to decieve and never really put his best foot forward when put under pressure.

Dansili the sire of Famous name is 3 for 3 with Gulch mares

Your mare is from family 1-x, she should be in America.

She was sold in foal to Speightown for $500k.
As you can see this was a D nick and the horse ran like one also.

What stallions are you considering for your mare?

I'd recommend Ghostzapper or Sky Mesa.

She's in foal to famous name and haven't started looking at next year yet. Why should a 1-x be in America?

I see you picked up the mare for a bargain price, nice buy.

I do think the mare would be better off in America and bred to Ghostzapper or Sky Messa - how profitable the foals would be???
If you can afford to keep them and get them to a 2yr old sale would probably be your best option if your looking to make money.

That's a lot of reading for this hour on the night  can ya put it simpler for me, I don't like the idea of cross breeding too close that's why we bought this mare to give us a wider stallion base to use than our other mares. Do you mean x-1's are more suited to running in the US? Sorry for the Q's but I'm learning every day

Female family 1-x has been a little successful in the US.

You can see that on your mares catalog page.

Have you thought about Footstepsinthesand at Coolmore?

http://www.g1stallionmatch.com/g1stalli ... internal=1

The also have Power and Excelebration who match well with your mare, both unproven but G1 winners.

Yea we have been looking at them for the future, coolmore are very good to deal with, no fee payable until there is a foal on the ground. My heart couldn't see past famous name this year. The loyalty bonus may prove fruitful yet also
