Dortmund
Looks like Bob Baffert might have another star in the 2YO ranks. Dortmund is 2 for 2 winning a MSW at SA in 1:15 and change for 6.5 F on 11/2/14, and winning an allowance race at CD in 1:35 and change for a mile on 11/29/14. Not bad for a 2YO.
Next Saturday (12/20), Dortmund is supposed to be entered in the Los Alamitos Futurity Stakes, a $500,000. grade 1 stakes race. I think that he will win it, based on what he has done so far (good workouts as well), but he could have some stiff competition from a colt named Mr. Z. If I am to bet though, my money is on Dortmund.
Dortmund, by Big Brown, has a lot of Northern Dancer in his pedigree and is inbred 3x3 to Danzig. Sounds like he could be a grass horse, but he is doing pretty well on the dirt so far.

Re: Dortmund
Do you remember the movie "Animal House" - wasn't Dortmund the surname of the character known as "Flounder"?
Love the reference! One of my favorite movies!

I think Dortmund is named after the football team...
Flounder was actually Kent Dorfman. Willing to bet that name is available though...
Either way, this horse looks like the real deal.

Re: Dortmund
Dortmund and Bayern are both teams in the German soccer " Bundesliga" , the top league in the country. Bayern are perennial acheivers but Dortmund not so much. Take from that what you will.

Re: Dortmund
It doesn't look like Dortmund will be entered in the Los Alamitos Futurity on Saturday. Apparently, Dortmund wasn't nominated for the race. Baffert has about 15 colts nominated, but not Dortmund. There were 105 horses nominated in all. Dortmund may have not made the cut anyway. Enough other horses to fill the race have probably made more money than Dortmund has, so far.
Not a big deal really. There will certainly be other races for Dortmund, and we know that he has the goods. Just stay healthy.
BTW, I liked that movie myself (Animal House).

Re: Dortmund
Thanks Georgerz. I just noticed that myself.
I don't know why Dortmund wasn't listed among the nominees (105 total).
Should be a good race. If I can get a bet down, my money will be on Dortmund (Hope that I didn't just jinx him).

Because it is a supplemental nomination. It was not originally nominated,

Re: Dortmund
I find the line breeding report very interesting, less than 44% different ancestors in the nine generation pedigree.

Give the Pope and the King of England a horse and in thirty days, they'll be stealing halters.

Re: Dortmund
Lots of Danzig and lots and lots of Northern Dancer. Bet he could do well on the turf.
Let's see. Dortmund is inbred 3Sx3D to Danzig and 4Sx4Sx5Dx4D to Northern Dancer. It doesn't seem to be hurting him any. Of course, if there is inbreeding, then Northern Dancer is not a bad horse to be inbred to. Kind of like Nasrullah used to be.

Re: Dortmund
There is now an article on DRF about Dortmund's name.
http://www.drf.com/news/hovdey-dortmund ... s-namesake
I think he's a nice horse, but Baffert (and other trainers) always have these really exciting prospects that get injured or don't stretch out. I refuse to be optimistic in December.

Re: Dortmund
Thanks Cree. Interesting.
I have seen a lot of horses that I liked get injured before the triple crown races. So, that is always a concern of mine when I start to really like a horse. Sometimes I think that I am a jinx to these horses that I like.
On the other hand, if Dortmund wins tomorrow, then he should just about be assured to have a stud career even if he does nothing after that. He just has to stay healthy and survive. Can say the same about any of his rivals tomorrow. He (the winner) will be a grade 1 stakes winner and about $300,000. richer.
