Two really nice races for opening day this Saturday (12/26) at SA. The final two GR I sprint Stake races restricted to 3YO's this year, both are at a distance of 7 furlongs and covers both the 3YO fillies and 3YO colts. They bring Kiaran McLaughlin and Linda Rice west to try their 3YO fillies and McLaughlin and Terranova come west to try the SA 3YO colts as well as another shipper, reigning sprint champ Runhappy. Below are the entries and past performances. TJ

Re: The GR I LaBrea and Malibu Stakes
I do believe that Runhappy will run them off their feet and I do like Cavorting, but because the odds will be low I have decided to play a pick 3 in races 6-7-8 and a pick 4 in races 6-7-8-9. With a little luck the tickets may pay at least what it costs to play. My pick 3 for $1.00 bet will be 10,11 with 2,3,6 with 4 for a total cost of $6.00. My pick 4 for $1.00 bet will be 10,11 with 2,3,6, with 4, with 4,5,10 for a total cost of $18.00 or $9.00 for a $.50 ticket. Good luck to all and may they all run safe and sound.

Re: The GR I LaBrea and Malibu Stakes
I was poised to select Finest in the La Brea until I saw Gary Stevens' recent sprint record: 4 for 70.
That is almost unfathomable.
Maybe Mike on Bird (#1)?
I still think Finest will have the lead at the top of the stretch, but the favored closers appear too formidable, IMO.
In the Malibu, Watershed is interesting. He certainly has a bright future ... Whether or not this is the breakout race is Tbd, but I can not bet Runhappy at odds on.

Nice call on the LaBrea, nice tri box, I sure wish I had paid a little more attention to the Roman's filly.

Re: The GR I LaBrea and Malibu Stakes
I wasn't overly impressed with the LaBrea. It was rather slow, but it was nice to see Birdatthewire win a G1 finally. She is a nice filly. I am starting to think she is a one-turn 8 furlong-type horse.
Runhappy could train himself. He's surrounded by chaos, but he's just incredible. I hope they don't screw it up. I thought Marking ran well and showed some heart running after Runhappy.
