2017 Preakness Probables/Possibles

Postby TJ » Mon May 08, 2017 10:34 am

No sense waiting around:>)...With just 12 full days to go before the 2nd leg of the TC, many of the Derby contenders have decided against the Preakness. Of particular note is Irish War Cry and McCraken (Mc'C will regroup and pass the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes, after suffering a cut in his hind leg). Third place finisher, Battle of Midway, is on his way back to California today and trainer Hollendorfer said although he was pleased with his effort, he's highly unlikely for the Preakness Stakes.
Below are the current Probables and Possibles....we know others will catch the milder case of Preakness fever (as opposed to Derby fever) and show up as surprise entries:>) That being said, the Preakness field will be limited to 14 starters and 2 AE's. Any starter who earned purse money in the Derby will have preference to run in the Preakness. Then starter preference is decided by Graded Stakes earnings if more than 14 are entered. TJ

Always Dreaming...probable: he went directly to Pimlico from CD Today.
Looking At Lee...probable: just wants to see how he is when he gets back to the track.
Classic Empire...probable: Contingent upon his eye, which was swollen after the Derby?
Conquest Mo Money...probable
Cloud Computing...probable
Multiplier...probable
Senior Investment...probable
Gunnevera...probable
Hence...probable
Term of Art...probable

Names in Bold Text have indicated they are very likely to run barring any problems between now and Preakness Day. TJ

I've been editing in recent confirmations to the Preakness field (above in bold print) which currently numbers 10. I'm sure more will take a shot...but the 10 that are confirmed are solid contenders. Gunnevera has just been confirmed, but Castellano asked not to ride him, so he can ride Chad Brown's Cloud Computing. Mike Smith will be on board Gunnevera after Girvin was withdrawn. TJ

If any of our posters hears news concerning the Preakness entries or is aware of any confirmed entry changes for any reason please post. That being said, Pletcher sent Always Dreaming right to Pimlico...another change to his previous routine, in which they would train up to the Preakness at his home base, Belmont Park and ship to Pimlico a couple days prior to the Preakness. Obviously a smart move to get AD used to his new surroundings and hopefully squash any thoughts AD might have about getting headstrong in his training. Pimlico is a more park like and laid back training area, similar to his previously serene training center here in Delray Beach, Florida....but it is a racetrack, so AD will most likely get out early to gallop when it will be less busy. Here's his first day of jogging (he went once around the wrong way) since his Derby win...seems very laid back and relaxed. No draw reigns, just basic yoke and rings in case he decides to get away from the pony. BUT, none of that came to pass and he was a gentleman throughout....so far:>) Nick Bush is on board, who is Pletcher's go to man when any of his horses go over the top and need draw reigns to control them. In the video you will see a lady with blonde hair, she has been with Pletcher for 20 years now and she is one of his top assistants...her name is Gina DePascuale and has been a key player in Pletcher's barn. Enjoy the video. TJ

Looks like they got the bad boy right where they want him. He is more energetic than he was at Palm Beach Downs but much better than the way he acted at CD. He looks to have made friends with the draw reigns, while galloping strongly but not without purpose. It is a great piece of equipment and it actually makes them stronger behind when galloping with their neck bowed like that. (video below)
Classic Empire jogged yesterday and galloped today at CD. Hence and Lookin at Lee both yesterday and today. The Asmussen pair are scheduled to breeze the usual easy 1/2 mile Monday, prior to the race and will fly to Pimlico on Tuesday. I'll try to post video's of these contenders...but so far none have been around? TJ

Here's the past performances for the currently confirmed and other probables not yet confirmed to run in the Preakness Stakes. That doesn't mean we won't get last minute entries....but at least you can check out your favorite contenders as well as confirmed new runners. TJ

Friday 5/12...still no video's from the following horses training at CD. Here's what they were up to:
Gunnevera: galloped today and will van to Pimlico in the morning. Hopefully we will get to see some video's then. TJ

Classic Empire: jogged a mile and galloped a mile. He is expected to van to Pimlico on Sunday.

Hence and Lookin At Lee: Galloped today. They are both scheduled to breeze an easy 1/2 mile this Monday at CD, than ship to Pimlico on Tuesday.

Always Dreaming: The track at Pimlico was a mess this morning and Pletcher decided to jog 2 miles, rather than gallop. Here's some of the journey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TEpfMmk98Q

Royal Mo: Gary Stevens was very upset that he didn't get to run in the Derby and his trainer, John Shirreffs reports Royal Mo likes to match strides so he'll be asked to roll coming away from there. Mr. S opted to gallop over the track since he knows Uncle Mo's like to hear their feet rattle under 'em:>) Here's Mo's trip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DShyo7b77VI

Saturday 5/13:
Hence, Lookin at Lee and Classic Empire: all galloped today at CD. Casse reported Classic Empire was very aggressive. No videos available.
Multiplier and Senior Investment galloped at Keeneland this AM. Both horses are scheduled to work Sunday.
Cloud Computing: worked a good 1/2 for Chad Brown this AM at Belmont Park. Chad was very pleased.
Conquest Mo Money, who breezed a half-mile in 48.40 seconds at Prairie Meadows Friday, is expected to arrive by van at Pimlico Sunday.
Gunnevera arrived at Pimlico this am...here he is getting in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTolC9_5nrc
Royal Mo: due to track conditions, scrapped plans to breeze this AM. Should breeze tomorrow? No video available today as he just jogged in the shedrow.
Always Dreaming: I've seen a lot of good horses gallop...but his gallop today was as good as it gets. Here's the video. TJ

I feel sorry for the poor sucker, he looks like he is in training for western pleasure class with his head down like that. Too bad he will go to stud, he has a really pretty trot!

Royal Mo has injured his sesamoid. Sounds serious, let's hope he makes it. An absolutely stunning colt, what a shame.

Hi Cree,
Yes, what a shame. Hope he gets through the surgery OK...but with sesamoid injuries it's always doubtful they will return to racing? TJ

They've stated it is career ending. Sounds like the soft tissue and other sesamoid is intact.
