The Federico Tesio Stakes

Postby TJ » Thu Apr 19, 2018 7:39 am

This may not be the caliber of 3YO's we've seen in the Derby preps, but a nice group of horses nonetheless. Of interest in the conditions to this race is, the winning horse will automatically be given entrance into the Preakness provided the horse was nominated to the Triple Crown. TJ

Holland Park performed better than expected, and he didn't have an easy trip. He may be a factor in the Preakness.

Hi George,
Only the winner of the Tesio received entrance into the Preakness since he had been TC nominated. Holland Park, for some reason, was not nominated to the TC series and if he did win, would not have been given a berth into the Preakness. If the Preakness doesn't overfill he could run, but will have to pay a $150,000 supplemental fee. TJ

I didn't think that such a well bred colt wouldn't have been nominated to the Triple Crown, as his owners have been wanting to win the Kentucky Derby for a long time. Hopefully, he will be pointed to the summer stakes, and do well.

Hi George,
That was my thought as well when I realized he wasn't nominated...powerhouse stables like Godophin usually nominate all their foals to the TC. Makes no sense unless it was an oversight? Godolphin and McLaughlin will be represented in the Derby with Enticed. TJ

When was the last time a Tesio winner won the Preakness? or Derby for that matter? They used to run it earlier.

Run the race - the one that's really worth winning.

Hi Jolt,
Though this race recently became a "win and you're in" event to the Preakness (given that status in 2016) you are right, it's been a while since the last Tesio winner won a Preakness...his name was Deputed Testimony. Oliver's Twist finished 2nd beaten a 1/2 by Timber Country while finishing a head in front of Thunder Gulch....both these horses he split were Lukas runners. Others who hit the board in the Preakness were Broad Brush, Icabad Crane, Magic Weisner and Rock Point. The Tesio was a Preakness prep for local runners from its inception and was known to them as the "Preakness Trial". The last winner to race in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness was Concerto who won the Tesio on 4/19 making the quick turn around to no avail. TJ
