Yawn.... Shamadral Retired

Postby horsenuts » Fri Jul 01, 2005 12:59 pm

Over on the Blood Horse you can read about the latest "retiree", due to injury of course.

You can set your watch by horses of the 21st century. Starting at 5-6 starts give or take a couple the end is near.. careers are now measured in months not years.... let the countdown(s) begin.

And just think you can breed to studs like Shamadral for $150,000(give or take $50,000) everywhere in both the NH as well as SH(via shuttling) and maybe.. just maybe... you'll actually raise one that makes it to 10 starts. All aboard!

Shamardal will need some stout mares to breed to as Shamardal has a long cast body, long legs and neck to go along with his swannie appearance.

The non-(Phalaris) mares will add to the soundness to his offspring, as Shamardal 12 crosses of (Phalaris) are crying for an outcross.
Those without sin cast the first stone.

Would somebody please add Shamardal's pedigree to the data base? Mary Syers

IMO the racing world has came to how much money you can make on the foal as a yearling, then how quickly you can earn some Graded blacktype at the track then retire because 'something in training' went wrong. It's really sad IMO.

At least Funny Cide was a gelding so we can see him race longer than 3 to 9 races than go to the shed to breed some other horses who will race 3 to 9 races and start the process all over again. Sorry, but it just makes me really angery!! :o

It is an unfair comment to Godolphin. Opposed to some other *cough* stables, they campaign their horse usually until at least their fourth or fifth year. In that regard they are great examples in the sport, think Dubai Millennium, Fantastic Light, Daylami, they all raced for years. They are usually not the type to whisk their stars off to stud in a hurry.
With the injury Shamardal sustained he could have had surgery and he could have returned to the track in time, but only after a long lay-off and there would be no guarantee that he would return to his old form.

Makes me angry too.
Ironically there is one sexually viable type of horse that I have found runs quite long and often- the turf female.
Riskaverse. Wonder Again. Film Maker. I looked at the lineup for the New York Handicap and I realized I've been watching most of these participants for years! And I will continue to watch them for years and years...

I've got to agree with Bumblebee. The Maktoums are real sportsmen, they love to watch their horses race. There's been no rush to retire their previous good ones to stud, and they certainly don't have any shortage of good stallions.

I wasn't making any comments directly at Godolphin, I was merely stating facts as I see them. It was only an opinion (mine). Sorry if I offended you somehow. :?

It is amazing to me because my stallion retired sound, hard sound, riding and jumping sound, at 7 after 30 starts, 2 G1 wins, 9 graded stakes wins or placings, etc., yet he is not getting that much attention.

His name is Rocking Trick. And, of course, we are just a "little" farm.....

I wasn't offended, dont worry

You are right, it is a shame that these days a lot of unsoundness is bred into thoroughbreds. Unintentionally, but still.

I have a great dislike of stables that retire sound horses at the end of their three-year-old year. That's my main point of frustration.
