Herpes Vaccines--attenuated versus killed

Postby follygirl » Sat Mar 11, 2006 8:10 am

I wrote in about my mare's spontaneous abortion at 255 days in February. The necropsy results showed equine herpes. My mares are vaccinated as per the usual schedule throughout their pregnancy. My vet uses the killed vaccine, and in my reading since, I came across some research from Cornell suggesting that the live attenuated virus vaccine may be better. Any opinions out there?[/url]

The live is apparently much more effective, especially for the neuro form. I recently got a new 5-way with Rhino (live), and have been giving my mares Rhinopneumanitis (live) rather than Pneumabort.

I used live twice, some years ago, both resulting in abortions.
