My Sole Survivor is Home

Postby ZiaLand » Thu Jun 01, 2006 6:43 pm

My Devon Lane x African Nights (Southern Halo) filly arrived home on Sunday. She's the only survivor of my small crop this year, so we were so happy to get her off the trailer safe and sound.

We think she's absolutely stunning, but then....we probably would no matter what she looked like...after this gutwrenching spring. :(

I'll try to get pics soon, but right now she's shedding her baby coat (it's coming in even darker--looks almost black, not gray!!!) so she looks a little scruffy. The blaze and those high stockings almost glow in the dark though. LOL She has an unusual marking on the leg that we originally *thought* was solid. It's a big blotch of white on the back of the fetlock.

She was showing off her sprinting ability quite proudly last night.

Our top name choices -- Storm Colors, Southern Pacific and Rising Storm -- are all taken. Any suggestions? We're trying to come up with catchy names with Storm or Southern. We wouldn't mind something with "star" in it either, since daddy is half-sib to both Starrer and Stellar Jayne.

Laurie - As for Storm... maybe a name with the word Tempest in it would work? Congrats on the filly! Will we be seeing pics soon?

I can't resist - how about "Storm Stellar" (as in "Quick let's get to the storm cellar!" when a real tornado is threatening)

Thanks everyone for your name suggestions. Several of those are on our short list. :D

I'll get (decent) pics when I can. She's shedding out her baby fur right now so she looks like half-buffalo. LOL

Looks like she'll be a deep liver chestnut (we'll register as drk. bay/brown) with tons of chrome.

Our filly has been registered as Storm Halo.

Thanks to everyone for your name suggestions. We used several suggestions as final name choices.

She's going into the Crossroads Ranch inaugural sale in Anthony, New Mexico (near Sunland Park) on October 25. Now that we've seen her in comparison to other weanlings, she is a big filly and very flashy.

I understand she's the only Devon Lane weanling in the sale, and the first of his NM breds to come up for sale in NM.
Her GSV = 62.41
Conduit Mare Profile = 7-6-3-9-2 Speed = 13 Stamina = 11
Index = 1.44 Triads = 16-18-14

Henthorn, the prepper is supposed to send me some. We took a few ourselves, but they didn't turn out well enough for 'mass publication'. 8)

I'll post as soon as I get 'em.

On the naming subject...

I just found out that ‘storm halo’ is related to solar physics. Storm and halo are types of solar protons. Guess we got that ‘solar/stellar/star’ reference in the filly’s name without even realizing it. :D

Here's a link: http://www.springerlink.com/content/x6t187571014x180/

I think the Storm Halo is also a type or brand of wakeboard (surf board). (That ties to Northern Sea in her pedigree.)
