He could be, but I look at it this way: Even though he beat older horses today, they were not of the caliber that Bernardini defeated in the Breeders Cup Classic, albeit defeated. Silver Train is a very nice horse, but he's no Invasor, Lava Man, etc. Ditto with Badge of Silver.
I do think one can make a case for Discrete Cat as Champion Sprinter, especially if Thor's Echo is beaten in today's De Francis Dash. DC ran his first 6 furlongs today in 1:07 3/5, on his way to a mile in 1:32 2/5, and I don't think Thor's Echo would have been anywhere near him.

Discreet Cat beat Invasor in the UAE Derby
He beat Invasor in the UAE Derby. Discreet Cat may be the best three year old in the country but he did not win the key races that should make him champion three year old. I think their main concern is keeping him undefeated. Discreet Cat may be the best horse in the country but he is not deserving of Horse of The Year or Champion Three Year Old because he did not win the big races that would have made him a champion.

Anybody know if this replay is on the net somewhere? I am in Korea and didn't get to see it. I wonder how long this guy will actually race. I would love to see him run for a year or 2 but sheez he's almost 4
time to break out the geritol. How can they expect him to keep up with all the younger horses?
I agree he didn't run the races he needs to be champion anything, but it does make it interesting that he did beat invasor.

According to his trainer, the Invasor who won the Breeders Cup is a far better racehorse in November than he was in March, when Discrete Cat smashed him.
It seems a shame that a horse of DC's talent will probably be shut out of an Eclipse Award. Even though DC ran 1:07 3/5 on his way to a 1:32 2/5 mile yesterday, Thor's Echo win in the DeFrancis will probably hold more water with voters in the Sprint category.
This sort of anomaly happens every once in a while. *GALLANT MAN in 1957 and BOLD N' DETERMINED in 1980 stand out in my mind as two other deserving superstars who were denied championships.

Secretariat, Ghostzapper, Native Dancer, Bold Ruler, Dr. Fager, Spectacular Bid and Discreet Cat were all produced from an outcross matings of NP on their dams side.
Those matings produced soundness and hybrid vigor to the above that enabled them to become record setters.

Those without sin cast the first stone.

There appear to be soundness issues with Discreet Cat and Ghostzapper. Unlike the others, these two are averaging or averaged about 3 races a year.

What a load of unprovable rubbish. Rather than looking at the top class horses, how about you start by looking at the talentless hacks of horses who couldn't beat their own shadow. I bet you find a ton of them that are products "from an outcross matings of NP on their dam side". This is completely asinine.
The fact that Discreet Cat is by a G1 winner who ran some great times as a racehorse and out of a G1 winner who has already produced a talented horse has more to do with Discreet Cat's performance as a runner than any claim of hybrid vigor and soundness (as if the two are related) as the source of this class.

That is a bit harsh on a three year old in Discreet Cat. He had one start as a Saratoga two year old, the owners decided to bypass the KY Derby trip after a rushed Dubai campaign, he got sick over summer and has come back with three starts in the second half of the year. Lightly raced but hardly suffering from "soundness issues". Invasor only had four starts this year (after suffering from a similar bout of sickness prior to the JC Gold Cup) and is likely to get horse of the year. Do you tag him as unsound?
Ok. Let's just get it out there......
Do you think the owners deliberately kept DC out of the Classic so Bernadini would win HOY???
I do. Why wouldn't they take a shot when the horse beat Invasor? People say Invasor has improved since the Dubai race but what makes people think DC hasn't as well......Setting a new track record as a 3 year old against older horses looks like improvement to me!!
I think they know who the better 3 year old is...DC.
However, on the flip side, Bernadini is a homebred so I can understand their attachment to him. It means more when a homebred wins big. Every breeders dream....
