I'll attempt to take a stab at answering that.

Tap Dance City.. ah.. pleasant Tap... okay let me wake up out of my pedigree porn..

lol, seriously, Tap Dance City is out of all dance, who is out of All rainbows, who is of course, the dam of winning colors. So one could argue that northern Dancer ran into a strong as steel female family and rode the coattails to success as a damsire on that one?

As a broodmare sire of RACEHORSES, Northern Dancer has done just fine. You are correct in saying that Tap Dance City is top-notch as a runner. His stallion career has just started, however, and so the jury is out on him.

As a broodmare sire of BREEDING SIRES, Northern Dancer has been a flop when you consider the quality of mares bred to him and the quality of stallions bred to them.

Chapel of Dreams--Northernette--Fanfreluche--Wild Applause--Dance Number--Northern Sea--Danseur Fabuleux...all exquisitely well-bred mares out of some of the best female families in the studbook and the best they could collectively produce were a couple of regional stallions in the US, a good sire in Argentina who flopped in the US, and a whole bunch of ne'er-do-wells. For a stallion who shaped the breed as much as Northern Dancer did, this is striking, and this is why I'm not sold on either Tap Dance City or Noverre despite them being by stalwarts like Pleasant Tap or Rahy.
