i do believe the chip is the answer.

If every person that even *thinks* a horse is a beautiful animal, worthy of better than ending its days in a slaughterhouse, were to give up ONE concert ticket, or one sporting event ticket a year, and give the cost of that ticket to any reputable equine rescue, so MANY MORE could be saved.

It just takes a lot more people doing a "little more".

This is a wonderful story for so many reasons. The most important reason is that the breeders actually cared. So many of them couldn't care less, or at least that is what their actions say. They may say they feel awful and are so glad that the horse was saved, but they just don't have the room, money, time etc.
It is nice to see someone actually taking responsibility for the animals that they chose to bring into this world. I know where every single one of my foals are, thank god. I wish all breeders and owners felt the same way. I could take up a new hobby instead of spending every penny I have and then some saving other people's horses.

BJ;
It's good that you (and the rest of you too) are so passionate about saving the horses. I used to feel a little guilty about wanting to save animals more than I wanted to save humans until a friend put it to me this way---Some people were put on this earth to save the humans and some to save the animals.

My aunt is one of those people. She has always struggled to make ends meet but takes in many equines (and other animals) because she NEEDS to and she has a little land. She volunteers at an equine rescue in South Carolina (S.C.A.R.E.). She is pretty 'frowny' on the racing industry because of the neglect she has seen.

But try not to make feel unworthy those of us who don't have any land or enough money to support an extra horse at someone else's place.
All I can do is give money where I can to all the horse charities that I can.

....and the chip? I don't know much about it. If your horse has it, will the killpens honor it if they have paid for your horse? Or are we just talking about the last owners calling you when they no longer want your horse? It's a step---better than nothing.

That's all that anyone, and most certainly I would ask. As for making people feel "unworthy"... No human who takes seriously, the responsibility of breeding and "using" the horse as a means of either pleasure or making a living, is "unworthy".

I don't have "land". If I did, there would be a lot more horses in MY life and I'm already maxed out. So...it isn't about "money" as much as it is about being responsible and really trying to do what you can. There are so MANY WAYS to contribute...not just with money.

Helping people to be aware of the issues of slaughter and discarded horses, so more that would care, CAN care, is just as important as giving money or providing shelter/land for these horses.

Those that have more money, and are able to do more, certainly SHOULD. But that doesn't mean they will. That is why things are so lopsided.

Marli and others could explain about the chip better. Marli, Kelly and others have been to the killpens. They would know firsthand, how that works...if it works. I'll find the links to the websites about the micro-chips and post them.

Every step we take, buys them more time and gives them more opportunity to NOT end up in a slaughterhouse or in some abusive, neglect situation. If we all do WHAT we can, WHEN we can...so much will be accomplished.

It starts in the breeding shed and ends at the slaughterhouse gates. There are so many opportunities along the way, NOT to have it end that way.

And here's the win-win for everyone! Just look at pic, the expression says it all, human & horse!

Yes if EVERYone would do just a little there would be very few racehorses at least ending up going to slaughter and probably a lot less of other horses too. I do as much as I can but I already have 18 rescue creatures eating me out of house and home plus some chickens and a guinea hen. So I try to send a donation to one horse per group and someday when I'm out of debt (LOL if...) I'll hopefully be able to actually give some of these horses a home but right now one big old useless TB is enough. But there are a whole lot of racehorse people out there (and horse people too) who have much more than I who don't give a thing and many of those are deliberately breeding horses that should be gelded and spayed rather than producing. :shock:
