Another expensive Pletcher two year old running for maiden claiming $35,000 - how many does he have this year? Geesh!
Bobby Flay owns this one...maybe we'll be seeing this horse on a plate in an upcoming cooking show.

Anyway, what kinds of mares did Sky Mesa get at 3C in his first season? Were they speedy type mares, or were they more distance laden, mile+ types? I'm looking at some of the pricier onces in his first crop and they were out of Alida (by Theatrical), Ascend (by Risen Star), Cocktail Sauce (by Tabasco Cat)...I don't see much "win early" with them.
I'm not a huge fan of Sky Mesa, but I think a crop deserves more than five months to prove if it can run or not. I think Yonaguska broke the record for first crop juvenile winners and most of them could have been claimed. Sky Mesa's dam, Caress, won Graded stakes on the turf, and maybe that's where his foals will excel. Let's see if Sky Mesas improve with age and distance before we start comparing Sky Mesa to Behrens and Gentlemen, OK?
Listen, I really hope you're right - I've got no problem with giving his offspring more time. What other choice is there?
Malibu Moon's injury was just devastating to me - I loved that horse; I'm glad he's proven to be a good sire.

I think that because Sky Mesa won the Hopeful and was an "early" winner, people are expecting the same from his foals, but his pedigree doesn't support it - he comes from a female line of turf oriented mares (IMO, at least).
AP Indy's best stock has all been dirt, but I don't think that means that AP Indy wouldn't be a good turf sire - we live in an age when good dirt stock often doesn't even try the turf. How many good dirt AP Indys try it? Mineshaft started his career on the turf, but his female tail is all dirt stakes winners and he might have been a late developer, anyway. However, many good Pulpits have tried the turf and several of his best offspring have been top turf performers (Pit Fighter, Wend, Stroll, Rutherienne....) - maybe because his 4th dam (Monarchy) was a full sis to Round Table. I'm thinking the same might hold true for Sky Mesa.
Malibu Moon - what was Stute thinking? He comes from a female line of French Group winners and Stute revved the horse up to win a :57 sprint. That's why I think that this horse may have had more raw talent than any other son of AP Indy at stud - had Stute been a little more patient and raced Malibu Moon for what he was bred to do, who knows how good he might have been if he showed that much talent in a baby sprint?
Nobody has patience any more. There's too much Pletcher/Asmussen/Baffert mentality around. Grrrr!!!!
