summerhorse - I guess thats the 64 million dollar question isnt it?! As to whether dun truly does exist in TB's at all. It can be argued that true roan doesnt either, but then when you see the pictures of the Catch A Bird offspring in Australia, you cannot call them anything BUT true roans, no matter what the JC says ...

Here are some pictures of Faux Finish at the ISR/Old NA inspection yesterday. I am SO proud of her! I cant wait to get her home again ...

She has to be one of the most beautiful horses, anywhere. The conformation, the color, the head, the eye. She is regal. My best wishes are that you get to enjoy her for the next few decades.

Her score was 98 and her overall impression score was a 7

I think the biggest problem we faced is that this is such old hat to her - showing on the line - that a comment was made on the COTH board about how good she looked and how quiet and calm she was. From what I understand, at the WB inspections they want them "up" and "animated" and for her, who showed in the Hunter Breeding ring for 3 years where we want them calm and serene and quiet, she simply reverted to what she has been taught to do - which was to stay calm and focused which ultimately hurt her swing and elasticity scores

From what I was told though, her scores were equal to or better than some very nice imported and NA bred WB mares so I really am very very pleased with how she made out! :)

Im shocked. I had 3 mares in the late 90s presented to ISR/OLD. One mare went premium and 2 were MMB with scores of 99 and 101 respectively. I find her quite appealing! I remember at one inspection I was at with Misty, a certain OTT TB mare was very "UP" so up in fact she was rearing and walking on her hind legs LOL! Never did see a forward trot but she has alot of spit and vinegar and went MMB. Id rather see a good temperment from the mare though. Nice to know her babies will be easy to work with LOL!

Yeah - while I am happy she passed, I thought her scores could have been better but c'est la vie - it is what it is and like judges at shows, its the opinion of one person on one day and thats it ...

And this is "Tulip" - an April 2009 TB filly out of Shastan (the lovely mare I used to own) shown at 4 months of age:

What a beautiful, elegant filly! :)

98 is still a good score. Once word got out that Chamie was going to be there I don't doubt half of the crowd was there to watch her! I'm sending you a PM.

Awesome! We are in the presence of a future matriarch. Well, perhaps the cross between her mom and dad too. :D Rejoice! :D

Congratulations. FF is gorgeous. 98 is a very good score especially if she was in hunter mode. I presented one of my hunter mares to them this year. I was worried she would not get in the MMB because she is so huntery. She got out there and trotted like I have never seen her trot before. She ended up with a score of 105. I was happy but even happier when it was over and I turned her back out in her field and she trotted like a hunter again.

Tulip is so elegant. Very pretty filly.

FF is gorgeous! After seeing her I am sure anyone would figure the judges were blind not to give her a higher score! As long as she passed that is what matters.

Catch A Bird seems to have carried and passed on a mutation of some sort. It is a shame that nobody "in the know" seems interested in seeing how phenotypic true roans popped out of a striped horse. We may never know. But he only passed it on 4 times that I recall (at least 4 of his pure foals, I think he may have sired some crossbred roans) which is nowhere near 50% of a normal true roan. That's of course because he was not one! But his foals seem to behave genetically like true roans.

I do not think dun, being a rather ancient color, is as likely to spontaneously mutate in the TB though. It is a simple dominant and requires one dun parent (at least).

There are more cases of genuine roan Thoroughbreds coming from Catch A Bird than his 4 sons/daughters (Red Noble [1996], Odd Colours [1992], Goldhill Park [1994], Slip Catch [1993]). There are several more coming from the mares Odd Colours and Slip Catch. It’s incredible the lack of sufficient interest in reproducing these color.

I wish there was some way of getting some of those Catch A Bird roan offspring into one of our breeding programs. Without breaking the bank to buy them and bring them over here!

Here is another GG offspring - a May 2009 TB colt out of a grey TB mare. SO far he looks like he is keeping the buckskin colouring and not greying out at all ... :)
