Stallions in Czech Republic

Postby saintlyCZ » Mon Jul 10, 2006 1:41 pm

When Secret'n Classy died some time ago, somebody made some note that it's sad there are no informations about stallions who left US and went to relatively unknown racing countries. With some other news worth mentioning for racing fans and our "annual trip" around Czech studs right behind me, I decided to write some article about it. As I previously said, I understand fans who are missing their old stars, so I hope this article will be useful.

First of all - list of foreign-bred and raced stallions in Czech Republic, who are active this year:

So that's it. Some of them were stars, some of them left absolutely no footstep here... I'm not writing more informations right now, but I can do when there's anybody interested in it. However - any racing informations or photos from abroad are welcomed! Especially photos of Rainbows For Life, who seems to be the best stallion we ever had!

And few words to our "annual stud trip", which we made last week. We visited five studs, which are standing almost the best stallions in the country. Photos of all stallions mentioned are available, if there's anybody interested! And as usual, please forgive any mistakes in my English.

Uhersky Ostroh - Bully Pulpit. Very impressive chestnut horse, although not too much high. We were joking whether Mr. Psurny is sure that it's thoroughbred, as he looked more like a quarter horse. Horse with near-perfect conformation - I would like only to see little, little more depth. Good and strong legs, strong neck, a lot of muscles, intelligent head. Nice to look and perfect for taking photograhps. Came for this season, so progeny will come, but I have to say I liked him very much.

Doubravy. Where are the times when three royally-bred stallions were there! Secret'n Classy died this spring, and Bretigny with Spinning Wild left for this breeding season. Only Laroche came for this breeding season from Stud Mimon. To be true, stallion in Stud Mimon almost means useless stallion, because there are no good mares and not much interest due to location of this stud. It was certainly good for Laroche to move to stud in other part of the country, but so far I don't know how many mares he bred. However, he's still a horse with a lot of charisma, and his condition is - I'd say - much better than in Mimon. He has very solid conformation, although he isn't so powerfully built as Bully Pulpit is. He has good depth in girth, a lot of slope in the shoulder and good legs, but has one thing I really hate to see on thoroughbred - weak rear end. Shortly, he isn't so impressive, but certainly is pretty well looking animal. Also has no racing progeny so far.

Vlachovice - Ray of Light and Fair Fabulous. "Fabul" is beautiful animal, altough not with perfect conformation - as well as Laroche, he has little weak rear end. However, the rest of his body is built for speed, which he possesses as a sire. Very strong and long neck and body, very deep girth. He has beautiful head for taking pictures and he's very good tempered. Not a model of champion stallion, but successful sire with good qualities - also sire of champion sprinter Kifaab. Ray of Light is multiple Czech champion racehorse, who lost Triple Crown by a nose. Irish-bred son of Rainbows For Life out of Topmost, by Top Ville. He was a small rocket (by the way, he's five cm smaller than his "small" sire Rainbows!) as a racehorse and great and fiery fighter; he stayed much the same way as a stallion. He has very strong and powerful conformation (that's also why he was always a joy to watch when he was racing), although he's not as elegant as Rainbows is. So far he has his first three year olds and not too much successful, but I'd guess he'll stay popular for some more years.

Strelice - Minds Music and Tribal Instinct. We've seen Minds Music only in his paddock, so I can say only he's quite calm animal. He's not much attractive - he's built to get the distance and not to run too fast, and also has a little strange colour. Just a stallion. He has no racing progeny so far. Tribal Instinct (Doyoun - Mystery Treat, Plugged Nickle) is - unlike Ray of Light - our Triple Crown winner, although he wasn't so popular (I'd say mainly because he had so much class he didn't need to fight so hardly ;-)). In the stud he also remained the same way - nothing attractive at the first look. Well looking horse, engineered to run - very deep girth, very long neck, good bodied, strong rear end. What is interesting - although he doesn't have so much muscles as Ray does, Tribal looks even more powerfully than Ray. Simply, perfect thoroughbred from great pedigree (It's not needed to comment Doyoun, and Mystery Treat traces back to Double Copy Mare Rare Perfume) across great racing career (also multiple champion) to perfect outlook. What I was surprised with, he's also very kind horse and seems to be very intelligent.

And finally Napajedla. This season they were standing five stallions, but Bear King had some health problems (I really don't know English equivalent, I'm sorry) and at the time of our visit he was back at his stall, but Look Honey had the same problem about a month after and still was at equine clinic in Brno. Also Varadar was only lying in his stable, so we saw only Mill Pond, House Rules and Rainbows For Life. Mill Pond is still wonderfully looking animal, but only thanks to his long mane - we saw him galloping along rail with his mane flying around, and we feel like in a fairy-tale. He still looks healthy and happy, and as we saw in March, he still enjoys breeding. But there are some infirmities of growing age, although he hardly look like 20 years old horse. House Rules is no horse, it's a mount of muscles and fat formed to equine body. We were told it's by steroids he was used to get as a two year old; however, he's unraced because of hairline fracture. I don't wonder - his groom told us he's weighing 780 kg... Anyway, House Rules is quite kind horse. I have to say we were affraid a bit to pet his head, because he's such a monstrous animal and really looks like he's going not to bite, but to eat your fingers. In fact he seldom let us to get to him, he was almost all the time trotting or galloping, but if he let us get nearer, he was acting like equine gentleman.
Rainbows... Rainbows is chapter on its own. Multiple champion racehorse and multiple champion sire; his offsprings are reigning over Czech tracks in the way almost nobody of us remember. He has five Czech classic winners (three of them multiple classic winners) and so many National Listed and first category (two highest categories of races here) winners, that it's almost impossible to count them. He's the best stallion we had since legends like Masis or Behistoun. Simply - he's The King, he's treated like The King and he knows he's The King. I would wish you to see his face when we were trying to move him around his paddock! We have tons of his perfect portraits, because he was standing like a statue, but we wanted also some photo where he would be moving. No, he wanted to stand, so he stood there and nothing and nobody would force him to move, because only he decides what he will do. It was crazy. But he's great horse and great personality with a lot of intelligence. We just love this horse!

At the end, two short news.
- last living stallion from Secretariat sire line, who was breeding here, died. Not Secret'n Classy, but Czech-bred Yocker. I was already writing about him here I think; son of Knesset, who was by General Assembly. We wanted to visit him both last and this year, but we weren't able to get there. He was a great horse (multiple champion and Horse of the Year) and we are really sad that he died. By the way, third and last stallion with Secretariat's blood was Sectori, standing here somewhere at the beginning of 1990's.
- Glenstal. Old Glenstal is still alive at the age of 26, but to be true... He looks quite well for his age, but his condition got a bit worse since we last saw him in July 2005. He put some weight off and he started to loose hairs from his tail. I have also photos, naturally, but I'm sorry, owners don't want us to post them anywhere, and I must agree, because they aren't too nice. I only want to let all members know that Glenstal is still alive, that he's happy and still is great old gentleman.

So that's all for now. I hope that this article will be useful for somebody and if anybody has any questions, I finally have holidays, which also means I have enough time for relatively quick replies!

SaintlyCZ,

How is Alex the Great doing over there? He was one of my favorites when he was running.

Thank’s Saintly for being back on board and this comprehensive information! I found some horses in Your list which I saw on the racecourse and then came out of sight. Nice to meet them again.

By the way: till 1989 we had two “German” Derbies: that of FRG (winners in Your list: f.i. Karloff and Laroche) and that of GDR (winner f.i. Fallada) – racing was taking place in two separate systems according to the closed frontiers. In 1990 we learnt that the difference between the class of horses was much bigger than even the pessimists had expected.

Louis seems to be really keen on Monsun-fillies and mares. They are “priceless gems”. Look at the auction-catalogue of BBAG for the August Yearling Sales: 6 colts by Monsun are on the market but no filly, even there seem to be no horses out of Monsun-mares – they are all well kept by their owner-breeders.

austique: I'll reply soon, but right now I'm affraid I would fall asleep on my table before I'll finish any sentence on him

parlo: I know, naturally - we're close to germany, You know. But I considered it a bit complicated for mostly American readers, and it's worth saying that even in our cataloques it's not mentioned. Times moved on... Now it seems like the whole horrible racing crisis in mid 80's has never been, so don't wonder that anybody wants to wake up the memories. I'm not saying it's good, but that's the way it is - at least here. There are really not many people You can talk about this difference, so I a kind of forget it. However, I'm glad I have a corrector of my articles  Good to mention it, thanks.

Louis: I know about two. Arganta, out of Antheus mare Anna Domani - double classic winner, who produced her first colt by Dashing Blade. Another one is Laren, half sister to this year's Derby winner Laureat - out of Touching Wood mare Lawooda. Maybe there are another mares, but I don't remember them. I'll try to find some statistics.

austique: something about Alex the Great. He came for 1999 breeding season - I must say I was a bit surprised it was so late, I thought he's here little longer. Whatever.
In 1999, he bred 38 mares (which is very high number here! In the past few years, the best stallions like Rainbows For Life or Secret'n Classy have 50-60 mares, and only a few stallions have more than 30 mares.) and had 22 foals from that crop. In 2000: 20 mares - 11 foals, 2001: 12 mares - 8 foals, 2002: 13 mares - only 2 foals and 2003: 3 mares - 3 foals. Not a funny reading, isn't it?
What's the reason... I think it's mostly due to his location. He's standing in Mimon Stud since he came to Czech Republic, and Mimon has very specific location: most of the thoroughbreds are bred and raised in the eastern part of Czech Republic, many also in the southern or middle part. However, Mimon Stud is in the north of Czech Republic, which is a kind of blind place in the map of thoroughbred breeding. I know it very well, I live only about 60km from Mimon. There are some stallions here, naturally, but mostly those unpopular or those who even have no place in breeding. Mimon is the only bigger stud here, while in the east of Czech Republic - where we made our "stud holiday", there are six top studs in such a small area that you could visit them in the only one day...
And if you wonder how he could have so many mares in his first years and so little in the next years... I don't know whether it's the right reason, but when he came, there were no good stallions in Mimon. But, no good... In 1998, there were Glowing and Law Soziri. Glowing was our Triple Crown winner (unfortunately, he proved to be not good sire and later tragically died) and "Lafik" was highly popular stayer (altough also more successful as steeplechase sire), but both of them left until 1999. I'm sure if they stay, Alex would have much less mares that year! For 1999, Falun and Just a Flutter came - Falun being very nice and classy Czech-bred horse, Just a Flutter is mentioned in the previous article. However, Just a Flutter is another stallion good for anything but producing thoroughbreds, and Falun... he could have been good, but he had no chance. He was breeding less than 5 mares per year, so what he could do... In addition to that, he was son of long-time Mimon stallion Fallada. So when Alex came, he had quite easy situation - he was just a king in Mimon.
But Czech breeding wass getting stronger and stronger - at least in pedigrees of imported stallions (I'm not saying that stronger in quality of horses bred here, although there are some steps forward too), so since 1999 many better stallions were imported to the whole country, and also good stallions came to Mimon. Laroche - now stallion in Doubravy, Signe Divin and Siam. All mentioned above. None of them has any chance in Mimon in fact - numbers of mares bred in 2003 and 2004: Laroche - 9 and 16, Signe Divin - 9 and 9, Siam - 3 and 5. All of them have better conformation and pedigree (I know he has pretty nice pedigree, but I suspect some of our breeders that they know maybe Northern Dancer and that's all - and I'm not joking) than Alex, so... I think his situation is clear.
And what about his progeny... He has only one first category winner and some solid multiple winners, and that's really too little. Something like if American stallion is able to sire one minor stakes winner in five crops of racing age - that's the same situation. From horses he has - the best was probably Giro, four times winner out of Taran mare (Taran was our Derby winner and champion, who also stood in Mimon). Sir Alex is that only first category winner - he won as a two year old good race in Pardubice - but it was his only race where he showed something. I remember that day, he was pretty impressive there, but... as many of Alex's offsprings, he looks great nad runs poorly. He never repeated this performance. Also worth mentioning is Judge Starr, winner of only one race, but he was a classic contender one year, and he was quite successful - more than his race record says. Fudzisan was first category placed also as a two year old, but personally I don't remember him. And the last I'd mention is Lombardick, whom I saw last year in Pardubice. He was a hurdler last season, but... I saw him in quite good level race, but he was jumping last hurdle maybe 20 or more lengths behind leading horse. However, it was pretty impressive race by him, as he jumped almost last, but clear - and immediately, without any help from his jockey, he shot forward with energy you would hardly expect when watching almost last horse in the race! He also finished third, by the way. It was one of the greatest racing moments I've ever seen. So Lombardick has a lot of talent I'd say (later, he finished seventh in top class race, which was great success), and personally I'd say that many of Alex's offsprings will be good over hurdles and fences. But as a flat racing sire... Maybe in some top stud, he would be quite good. In Mimon and now, when his first crops were so poor... I'd say it this way: as far as he stays in Mimon, he'll have some of their mares every year, so I wouldn't be affraid of his future. But he's not going to do any hole in the racing world.
But the last thing, that's worth mentioning - he has many fans here. Sometimes he's - together with some other stallions and not only thoroughbred - paraded in traditional show in Lysa nad Labem, which becomes for three days a centre of horse world here. My friend sometimes visit it, and although she is neither blind, nor lenient when watching horses and judging their conformation, she admitted that Alex has a special charisma. And she isn't the only one who says it! Also when I saw him two years ago in Mimon, I was surprised by him. It's hard to explain, but... when you're with him, you simply watch and feel other things than his conformation, you don't look at it. In the pictures it's well visible that he isn't exactly ideal thoroughbred, but when you stand next to him, conformation problems are the last you would think of. So he's quite popular around the country (naturally not among thoroughbred breeders), and that's very rare position here.

SaintlyCZ,

Thanks for the update. Its a shame he wasn't able to make more of sire, but his popularity despite that is quite funny. He's very flashy, I think thats the key  Perhaps his foals will have a future over jumps. He would have had probably less success over here if thats possible  Also thank you for laying out how the breeding farms are laid out in the Czech Republic. Thank you again.

Sincerely,
Austique

austique: I'm glad I can help :D
Fortunately Czech horses aren't going abroad, so I don't have similar problems - like "where did my favorite horse go?" Still I hate situation when I can't find what happened to my favorite horses HERE, so - why not to help. It's really no problem for me

Saintly: When you visit those farms do yu get positive vibes when you look at some of those quality TB ?

I have those same vibes when I see an outstanding individual, everything seems to fall in place and I get that special feeling.

I love the challenge to pick out that next GR SW by watching those TB on the toe ring. When I find those TB they are usually Ky. breds or Fla. breds.

Good hunting and have a great holiday. Yours in Sport Louis.
