Hello ,
I am new here and was wondering if anyone could help or point me in the right direction . My horse was born and raced in Argentina and I would like to trace his pedigree and find out his birthdate and history . He is tattooed but it looks like the first mark is an asterisk instead of a letter . Could this be possible because he is from Argentina ? I bought him 19 years ago (he was 5 to 7 years old then) and the woman then said he had only been off the track and in the US for a few months . She only called him by the name of Silky . Help , where do I start ? Most sites I've checked search by the racing name which I don't have .
Thank you in advance ,
Debby
Where do I start to research my horses history ?

If all you have is a tattoo number, then the only folks who can help you are the Jockey Club. Their website has a tattoo research service, but there is a fee.
If he raced at all in the USA, his number must be on record. I have never seen an imported horse's tattoo, but it starting with an asterisk wouldn't surprise me....years back, an imported horse would be listed with an asterisk before their name, rather than the contry code behind the name as they do today. Madelyn may have more insight, as her lovely stud is from Argentina.
Good luck!

Rocky's tattoo is 37363, which is his registration number. I have a two horses that were imported and raced in the US, and I have their papers. The other horse, a mare named Tobago Cayes, came from France, and her registration number, and her lip tattoo, are 34254. Rocky was born in 97 and Tobago was born in 94. They both have a Jockey Club Certificate of Foreign Registration. I suspect that an imported horse is issued a number starting with a "3" (which could fade out to look like an asterisk), followed by a digit for the year of birth, and then a unique number. Its original foreign papers are surrendered to the Jockey Club and new papers issued.
Rocky's papers show that his original certificate was issued by the Secy. Argentine Stud Book of Buenos Aires, Arg. The replacement was issued to Walmac International, Dwight Sutherland & Jose De Camargo. I imagine they actually imported him. The papers were issued on 8/30/02.
Tobago's papers were originally issued by France Galop of Paris France and the replacement was issued to Willmott Stables, Inc. Hers were issued on 3/4/98 and on the back there is a stamp on August 21, 2000 "Blood Typed and Entered into the Ownership Registry" which probably corresponds with the timing of the registration of her first foal. That could be entirely coincidental.
Now here is one of those "get outta here" coincidences. Tobago Cayes is a mare I recently picked up from a breeding farm, along with a couple of others, at a sort of a dispersal. Rocky came to me from the racetrack, through a trainer I know. They are from different ends of the world.
Rocky's second dam, La Vire, is half sister to Virunga, the GSW and dam of the French stallion Vacarme. Of the five Stakes horses that are Tobago Cayes' half siblings (3 graded!), the best is by Vacarme. Perhaps Rocking Trick x Tobago Cayes (she will be bred to him in 07) has some promise to it.

So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....

How long ago did they do this ? I believe my horse to be between 24 - 26 years old , can anyone tell me what letters might correspond to those years ? How does one know what years go with what letters ? I just mostly want to find out his true age and possibly his original name , but the more info I find the more interesting it would be . It's starting to feel like my own birthfamily search .
Thank you all so far for your replies ,

I always thought that there as an asterisk that appeared on the jc papers on an imported horse. At least I thought this was the case for the only imported tb for which I have actually seen the papers. He is a 1994 like madelyns, so maybe no asterisk but rather a 3 or whatever.
I'll check his papers tomarrow, which will be easy, and try to check his tatoo, which may not be!
In any case, I'll let you know what I see on this one. Provided, of course, that I still have all my digits and am not trying to peck out a message with my bloody nubs.
Just kidding, this guy is pretty benign; but he is the original self-preservationist and takes a dim view of people who attempt to interfere with him without the detomindine/torb dose he expects. His motto: "people who grab you lip must be up to no good."

Well I rechecked the tattoo tonight and it looks like *23499 although the last two numbers are slightly faded . I plan on using the JC tattoo search and seeing what they find . Do they give you a date of birth with the results ? and how long does the search take ? He was a stallion when I first bought him , how does one find out if he was bred and possibly have babies out there somewhere ?
Thanks again you guys have been wonderful !

Good luck! I have never used the JC's service, so I can't answer how long it takes, but I have seen the results (for US-breds, anyway) and they do mention date of birth. Your guy will probably have been born in the fall, since he's a southern hemisphere baby.
You mentioned in your first post that he wasn't long off the track when you got him, so the odds of him having sired foals is rather slim - stallions very rarely pull race/stud double duty - but it can't hurt to ask.
Also good luck to Freshman, who hopefully is still in possession of ten fingers! For my part, I looked at some 25-years-and-older racing magazines, and it looks like the country codes came into use around 1980 or so.
