I think your missing a number? The first digit is a letter, followed by a series of numbers, the first 2 numbers being the year the horse was born. So it could possible read F02782 for a 2002 horse or V92782 for a horse born in 1992. Even older M82782.
Please someone correct me if I am wrong but I think I am on the right track and got my numbers and letters in good order.

Could it possibly 92? Its not too far off.
I'm being told different things so someone please give us the correct info. I only have 2 tattooed tb's and one is not at home and the other is worn out so I have no reference.
Does the letter replace the first number of the year on a tattoo. For instance it would not be V92782 but rather it would be V2782?

If it is a "V" he was born in '91.

V2782 would mean the registration number on his papers is 912782.

Okay, hang on... Z is 1996.

Y - 95
X - 94
W - 93
V - 92
U - 91
T - 90
S - 89
R - 88
Q - 87

etc.

Sorry, I was wrong in my earlier post.

HOWEVER. Foreign born horses do not have tattoos that follow this pattern. My two foreign born horses are Tobago Cayes (FR) and Rocking Trick (ARG) and they both start with the number 3.

Hey, thanks for that info! I have a gelding that I can read "3490" on as clear as day, but I can't see any letter before the 3. It seems like there may be another number after the zero, but I can't make it out or even be sure it is there. Maybe he is an Argentine bred. Can you tell me how many digits your Argentine horses have total?
