Odd Lumps - Any ideas?

Postby Bondama » Mon Dec 11, 2006 11:20 am

Got a preggo mare who's due to foal any day. This is her first foal. She's beginning to really bag up, but since this is her first, her bags aren't long or droopy, just really plump. She does have two odd lumps though, just forward of the bags, maybe 3 inches or so, side by side, corresponding to each teat. They aren't huge, each one maybe the size of half a hardboiled egg placed flat on the abdomen. I felt them (and looked at them) for the first time last night. I check this mare daily as I'm very anxious after having lost a foal last month. Anyone know what those lumps might be?

It apparently is milk ducts and they were filling up! I went out at 5:30 this morning to feed and discovered an enormous colt! She must have had him early as he was dry and fluffy, nursing and following mom around quite well. I'm waiting for the vet to come out now - mom hasn't passed her placenta yet, so he wants to give her a shot of oxytocin.

To answer your question, Madelyn, he is appendix. Mom is a 17h chestnut TB, and pop is a 15h perlino QH.

Details and photos to come!

Got a good look at him in the daylight.....he's very long-haired right now, but appears to be a very very pale buckskin....like buttermilk even. His mane and tail, however are reddish....like strawberry blond almost. He has a white star, goodish size, bigger than a half dollar and one white rear sock. (Mom has the same sock on the same foot)

The vet was very impressed with the colt, and said he is HUGE and very correct. I thought so too, so was relieved to hear Dr. Herrero say it! He's nursing like an old pro and has absolutely NO fear. Came right up to me, and to the vet like "Who are you?" I can tell he's going to have tons of personality. Can't wait to watch him develop.

The really weird thing? When my alarm went off at 5:30 this morning, I was dreaming about the foal....and he looks just like the one in my dream. In the dream, his barn name was Erik (of all things), and I sold him for $7500. So, his barn name IS Erik now, but his registered name will be Hollywood something, haven't decided just what yet. Maybe Dreaming of Hollywood! :)

Pictures definitely to come. I promise! I'm just so excited, I can't tell you. After that sad mishap with the first foal, today is just the biggest thrill ever.
