A colt

Postby Thunder » Sat Apr 14, 2007 3:35 pm

by Rocking Trick O/O Sal's Prospector on 4/12/07. I've been up since Thursday night assisting the colt/mare. Sally is having a hard time being a mom. I've expressed colustrum and milk from her to give to the colt. I've also given him mare replacement and will eventually give him Foal-Lac. The Amish community will give me a hand in raising him and that is where he is headed now. Nevertheless, we are very excited about this colt. Our Labrador has been right by his side all this time. Tonight I will get some rest! Happy Foaling

Yes, a maiden mare. I made a visit this afternoon and he is doing well. The Amish have gentle geldings who will adopt him. But I am still searching for a nurse mare to take over as a surrogate mom. Their mare isn't due for another couple weeks. Hopefully, the colt will survive. So far, so good...

Congratulations on the colt! What seems to be the problem with Sally??

I raised an orphan last year on Buckeye Milk Replacer and Buckeye Foal Pellets and he is superb and just a good as all the other colts. He didn't need a surrogate OR a nurse mare.

I checked up on the colt this evening at the Amish community. According to the Amish, the colt was doing well up until 11:00 pm last night. When they went to bottle feed it at 2:00 am, the colt was lifeless. I've been there many times over the years, and this is the first time one of the Amish ladies has ever talked to me. She apparently was the one who took care of the colt. She also cried. When I got home, I informed my family. They feel sad, but we will move on. They all had a part in this colt. I've also informed my pedigree forum connections. Thanks for the support. So goes life...

Thunder - I am so terribly sorry for your loss - having lost foals in the past I know how heart wrenching it can be. I never did understand why the mare couldn't take care of the foal and why it was sent off to the Amish to raise however.

Thoughts to you and your family - I know you have heavy hearts tonight.

So sorry, Thunder. I know the big lump-in-the-throat feeling you've got now. :( Either this young'n wasn't ready for the world, or the world wasn't ready for him. It doesn't hurt any less, though. God's timing isn't always in agreement with ours. :?
