Opinions on this stallion

Postby hunt_jump » Sat Dec 04, 2004 12:44 pm

What do you all think about the stallion Tons (1999) by Boundary o/o Scads (Forty Niner). I am a sporthorse person and think he looks interesting from that perspective. I am guessing based on his race record that he wouldn't be of much interest to the race industry, am I right or wrong? His pedigree seems pretty decent from what I have found (but again this is not my area). Can anyone tell me anything about the Forty Niner line?

Thanks

I think you are correct in that he wouldn't be of much interest as a racehorse sire; competition's too stiff. He has a very nice pedigree overall, but a son of Boundary isn't going to get anywhere near the same opportunities a son of Storm Cat would on the same race record.

Forty Niner and his sons generally appreciate a return of *Ribot through some strain other than Tom Rolfe in their mares. Forty Niner was quite a nice runner and sire and was probably packed off to Japan a bit prematurely given that he had several very good runners appear right after he left. He certainly suited the American sire market better than the Japanese -- hasn't done nearly as well there.

Thanks, I find the pedigree stuff interesting and am having a good time trying to learn a bit about the racing side as well as the sporthorse side of the industry. I didn't quite know what to think with a horse like this with not a great looking race record as far as I can tell (he was an allowance and probably claiming horse I think), but what looked like a decent family (he is full to a stakes placed and 3/4 to a 7 figure sale yearling) - well other than I think he is a very good looking young horse .

Thanks for the input of Forty Niner too. Do you happen to know how correct his conformation was and his soundness?

I don't know too much about Forty Niner's conformation except that he was slightly on the small side (he listed at 15.3 hands in his stud advertisements). He made 19 starts in two seasons -- pretty good by modern standards -- and as far as I can recall retired sound. He was champion 2yo male in 1987 and the second-ranked 3yo male of 1988 behind Risen Star, so a very consistent racehorse.
