Jealous Profit Returns To Sprints In Laz Barrera

Jealous Profit, a distant sixth in the Arkansas Derby in his last start on April 15, will return to sprinting in the $150,000 Lazaro Barrera Memorial Stakes at Hollywood Park Saturday, trainer Doug O'Neill said Sunday. The Grade II test named in memory of the Hall of Fame trainer is for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs.

"He's got the body of a router but his form shows he prefers one turn," said O'Neill of the Florida-bred son of Trippi. Patrick Valenzuela has the Barrera call.

Jealous Profit, owned by J. Paul Reddam, has won one of eight starts but has been at his best sprinting. He broke his maiden at 6 ½ furlongs at Santa Anita on March 18. In his first two starts at seven furlongs last year, the chestnut colt finished second in his debut at Calder and third in the Del Mar Futurity won by champion Stevie Wonderboy.

A field of at least six appears set: Jealous Profit (Valenzuela), San Pedro Stakes winner Arson Squad (no rider), Harry Henson Stakes winner Corazondelcampeon (Corey Nakatani), Quietly Go (Victor Espinoza), Remembering Star (Aaron Gryder) and unbeaten Northern California invader Northern Soldier (Chance Rollins).

Possibles are headed by Get Funky, making his first start for the John Sadler barn, and Turf Paradise stakes winner Hey Slick, who is also under consideration for the Will Rogers Stakes on the grass the following day

WELD HOPES TO CONTINUE LUCK AT HOLLYWOOD PARK

Irish trainer Dermot Weld, who posted his third major stakes victory in four years at Hollywood Park when Grey Swallow romped to a five-length score in the $250,000 Jim Murray Memorial Handicap on Saturday, said he hopes for more luck at this track.

"My mother has a nice Galileo filly named Night Time, who will make her next start in the Irish Thousand Guineas in two weeks," said Weld, who has her under consideration for a trip here for the $750,000 American Oaks on July 2.

Weld won the 2002 Matriarch with Dress To Thrill and the 2003 American Oaks with Dimitrova before the Jim Murray victory with Grey Swallow, the 2004 Irish Derby winner bred and co-owned by Weld's mother.

Robert Dolan, Weld's assistant and exercise rider who has been with the horse since he was flown to California from Amsterdam on May 1, said he knew he had luck on his side before the race.

"Mrs. Weld blessed the horse before his flight and taped a St. Christopher medal to his bridle that he wore during the race," said Dolan Sunday after Grey Swallow's decisive victory.

"I thought he would win, but not like that," said Dolan as Grey Swallow stood in his stall wearing a blanket for his 2005 Tattersalls Gold Cup victory. "He came back 100 per cent. He never left an oat last night. His legs are ice cold."

Dolan pointed out that Grey Swallow has never been beaten in his first start of the year. He is now four-for-four after winning his first outing at ages 2, 3, 4 and now 5.

Grey Swallow was scheduled to be flown to Maryland from Orange County on a Tex Sutton charter Tuesday morning and be vanned to New York for his next start in the $400,000 Manhattan Handicap on the Belmont Park turf on June 10.

Trainer Bobby Frankel, who scratched 122-pound high weight King's Drama from the Jim Murray Friday after expressing dissatisfaction with the weights, said the 6-year-old gelding would also be flown to New York. Races under consideration include the Manhattan.

Trainer Doug O'Neill praised the effort of runner-up Brecon Beacon, which set most of the pace, and complimented the winner by calling him a "freak."

Trainer Dan Hendricks echoed similar sentiments with Runaway Dancer, the defending champion which rallied from last to finish third. "Lack of pace may have cost us second but we weren't going to beat the winner," said Hendricks in deference to Grey Swallow.

TRAINERS HIGH IN PRAISE OF APPRENTICE GARCIA

Apprentice jockey Martin Garcia, who made an auspicious debut at Hollywood Park with two victories aboard four mounts on Friday, received rave reviews in the stable area.

"We haven't had an apprentice this good in Southern California since Patrick Valenzuela (in1979)," said John Sadler, for whom Garcia won his first race aboard Lemaire. "He's a natural. He's just built to be a jockey."

Garcia won his second race aboard Pay Houston for trainer Jack Van Berg. "He's as good an apprentice as I've ever seen," said the Hall of Famer. Garcia, a 21-year-old native of Veracruz, Mexico, won 149 races in Northern California this year before moving south last week.

SHE'S AN ELEVEN EARNS BLACK-EYED SUSAN START

She's An Eleven, which romped to an easy victory in the $200,000 Melair Stakes for 3-year-old fillies here on April 30, has earned a start in the $250,000, Grade II Black-Eyed Susan Stakes at Pimlico on Friday, trainer John Sadler said Sunday.

"She worked brilliantly Saturday," said Sadler of a six-furlong bullet drill in 1:11.40 here under exercise rider Ricardo Peniche.

Sadler said the California-bred filly would be flown to Maryland on Tuesday and be ridden by Garrett Gomez Friday. Sadler said the filly would be his first Pimlico starter.

TOP THREE GAMELY FINISHERS EARN CASHCALL INVITATIONS

The first three finishers in the $300,000 Gamely Breeders' Cup Stakes for fillies and mares on May 29 will receive invitations to the inaugural $750,000 CashCall Mile on the grass July 1, vice president of racing Martin Panza announced Sunday.

The Grade III CashCall Mile will be limited to 12 starters. Nominations close Wednesday for the Gamely at 1 1/8 miles.

Owner J. Paul Reddam, who is sponsoring the race named for his consumer lending company, had two candidates work this weekend for the Gamely. Santa Barbara Handicap winner Sharp Lisa breezed six furlongs on dirt Saturday in 1:14.40 for trainer Doug O'Neill.

I for one will believe it when I see it. He doesn't have a license to ride anywhere yet, and it is no "gimme" that he will get one.

nah.. I'm 165 and i'm 8% BF I'd look pathetic and feel pathetic that small.

From what I hear there is a good chance he will get the Lava Man mount back and can very well get the Tiago mount.

you have to admit.. there is a reason the guy gets so many damn shots.. he's GOOD. he's the best jockey in the country

Why on earth would Nakatani lose the mount to Valenzuela at this late stage in the game?

it's like going from say... from good to better

Mike smith is a middle of the pack rider out in SoCal, the weakest jockey colony of the big 3. he races okay in big races... PVal could do a line in the post parade and still outride the jocs down there.

Pepole don't seem to understand.. PVal is probably the best jockey to touch a track since Angel left. he's THAT good. that's why he gets so many chances. the best race lava man ever ran was when PVal rode him in the gold cup. I
ve never seen a joc get so much out of a horse.

I have to agree - when he's riding clean, PVal is in a class by himself.

I wouldn't say that PVal is a better speed rider than was Angel Cordero (Cordero was the BEST speed rider of all time, IMO), but as an overall rider, I'd take PVal over Cordero.

There are two rides that stick out in my mind: Cordero on Bold Forbes in the KY Derby and PVal on Sunday Silence in the Preakness. If you add Bailey's ride on Red Bullet in the Preakness, it just doesn't get any better.
