There is a special on channel 7 (Detroit) tonight at 11pm on the dark side of thoroughbred racing. Yes they used the term "racing thoroughbreds to death." I'm going to watch it and I'll let you know what they say.
I have come across more responsible race horse owners than irresponsible ones. I have seen irresponsible owners in every discipline, so it kind of bugs me that they would be focusing on the tb racing with the new track going in. Thats all we need is some pita, oops I mean peta, people at the tracks.
Racing thoroughbreds to death???

Isn't it sweeps month? Maybe they figure that sensational blather like this will get them more viewers.
Check out the retiring thoroughbreds from Finger Lakes Racetrack, for sale through FLTAP (a 501 (c) (3) ) at http://fltrainerlist.proboards104.com/

I may be wrong, but isn't ABC owned by Walt Disney? And isn't ESPN also a Walt Disney owned company? My understanding is Walt Disney is a large contributor to PETA and other organizations like them.... At least that is what I think I've heard at some point or another. Probably explains a lot about the ESPN coverage of thoroughbred racing in general....

Yep I agree Karie. I don't think that was a good move on the "rescues" part. I think they need to stay on the trainers good side. I don't know who that trainer was that they interviewed, since his face was blocked out, but I bet he really enjoyed seeing himself on the 11 o clock news last night. It was sneaky.
And that chestnut they showed, he looked a lot like my stallion, same face and stockings. But my guy was not raced in MI but he does have tendons.

I'm pissed that there are owners and trainers out there who screw the rest of us by doing this dumb shit. A jockey should be doubly angry. This not only jeopardizes the horse but the rider and the other horses and riders that are on that track with them.
Yes I do think that maybe media needs to put the better aspects of racing in the same format, but as long as you have a few idiots out there it's always gonna be an uphill battle. I'm sorry , I know horses are run in less than perfect shape, or with chips but that will never be done by us.

trying to come up with something brillant..... this may take a while.
After watching that "special" i can honestly say I have NO support for Canter.....they are a black eye for horseracing.
To put there own agenda's on a national stage they are going to get zero people to support them when it came off as propaganda.
There are better ways to draw attention than to smear the people who are trying to help you out!

"The easiest way to end up with a million dollars in the horseracing business is to start with 3 million!"
They said that after the horse came to canter an x-ray revealed the bad tendon. Since when can you see tendons in an x-ray? A sonogram yes, but not an x-ray, and I've never had to put a horse down because of a tendon.
They didn't say everything that was wrong with the horse, there had to be more than that.............
But if they knew the horse had all those problems, it shouldn't have been running. I'd be po'd too if I was the jockey.

I thought the Canter rep. in this feature was surprisingly undiplomatic in participating in the 'secret camera' operation.
When I dealt with Canter Ohio as they tried to help me track down my horse, my overwhelming impression was that they had a good relationship with the horsemen at the tracks. Many of the horses on the Canter sites that I've looked at are actually trainer listings that Canter posts as a service to the trainers that also benefits the horses, and far fewer listings are actually Canter rescues.
Please don't make blanket judgements about Canter on the basis of the actions and statements of one individual.

I can the road from both sides of the fence. I helped CANTER for a few months, and worked mostly with my old trainer placing horses on CANTER.
Trainers get po'd when people who are shown the horses are not familiar with track rules and regulations. (I.e. Can I ride him??? Can I see him jump??? etc etc) I think that's where the trainers comment .."it's not a petting zoo" came from. Fustration.
I also scan the listings every so often, and I do believe a slight amount of horses are misrepresented. It sounds like every horse on the website is a saint in horse clothing.. Nevermind the fact it could have dumped its jock at the gate in its last race.. small minor details.. It just needs a new home.
There is no reason to have a hidden camera investigation to the going on at the racetrack.. OMG!!! A Horse with a Chip!!! Say It Isn't So!! His quality of life is sinking faster then the Titanic, put him down now! -Yeah a little extreme.
Then again, god bless them for all the coordinating work they do. To help get horses trailered, excepted into retirement homes, answering questions. It's a full time job in its self, and these people VOLUNTEER to do it.
It is rewarding to see things go right, and so very fustrating when unfounded "investigations" put a sliding stop on things.
I salute the volunteers of CANTER New England for all their time and effort, as well as putting up with some of the looney tunes at Suffolk Downs. Great Job Ladies & Gents!
