That "woosh" sound you hear coming out of NY is people getting the heck out of there - it's more than likely that racing will shut down on January 1st and nobody wants to get left holding an empty bag.
What synthetics are to California racing:

Now Roke, you don't honestly think racing is going to shut down in NY.. do you?
Do You
even so, america wouldn't notice really until the first saturday in june, the wood would not really be missed, just means the Florida derby and arkansas derby will have stronger fields.

trust me winds, I'm smack dab in the middle of little rock (well actually west little rock) and you don't want to be here in the winter. it gets pretty nasty.
I don't think anything beats winter socal racing.

Really? Of course it's been decades since I've been there, and we didn't ship in until after the first of the year. Early on there was a blizzard (that was fun driving in by myself from NY! ) and we trained in the afternoon. It only lasted like that for a week. Then the weather got nice and we all got tans ( rented a house on a private lake ) and everything costs half as much as NY. We loved it, was 85 degrees when we left and in the 40's and raining in NY..........ugh!!!
So, it's changed weather wise now? Damn!!! Another dream busted! But at least I have my memories.........

let me put it in persepctive winds.
here is your avg Feburary day at oaklawn:

what's F'ed up about oaklawn is for most parts, it's really a month meet. you can only really make it pleasant from thebeginning/middle of march until the middle of april when it ends. January/feburary ahs too many bad days, 20 degree weather, snow, ice, etc.
that's why there is no turf track. no point.
hot springs is the 4th cheapest city int he nation to live in. dirt cheap. I'll give you that. Even I live in little rock, my mortage on a 2 bed room 2 bath townhouse is just $650 a month and I live in the best part little rock, right off chanel valley. When I stayed in Sarasota Florida, I stayed in an apartment that was about..oh...let's call it 7 miles away from Siesta Keys and which is the beach.. Decent neighboorhood not GREAT but not bad, 2 bedroom but just like 900SQ and I was paying 1500 a month and that was considered good.

Yea, the weather has changed. Yes it is cheap to live there, I loved that. What we thought was so funny is everyone doubled their prices and thought they were ripping us off. Yet we paid less than 1/2 of what we were used to in NY and thought we were ripping them off. We were all happy!
Well, I'll keep my memories. We won everything once the races got longer. I lived off of my wins and banked my paycheck. We ate steak every night and partied hardy. It was fun.......................
But then I did spend 2 winters at Payson Park, got there before Thanksgiving and left in the end of March. Went swimming on Christmas Day, ate stone crabs, ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I love my memories.......

ps - some things you keep to yourself!!!! LOL

My trainer is getting ready for it - everyone that's stabled in NY this winter is getting very nervous. The politicians are involved, which means that nothing good can be expected. If the tracks fall into bankruptcy court, then it's up to the courts to decide on racing until the franchise control is decided. Just great, huh?

You can fool some of the people some of the time, but not me, Winds. We heard the stories that used to pop out of the Cantey barn. Geesh!

sad but true

maybe that's honestly what horse racing needs, a rude wake up call.."this is what happens if you don't get your shit together.. horse racing is a business and businesses shut down"
On a side note, poor TVG... their winter lineup already is horrible.. take out NY races and they are left with all of turfway and sunland park!
I can't remember, we all went to a private club. One guy got a membership then we all could go in. I'm talking about the late 70's here.
I have an idea of where you are talking about.
Coys is a stakehouse about oh...4 miles away from the track, right off the highway..well night right off but close to it, up on a hill.. I forget the street. best stakes in arkansas hands down.

Probably the bar/lounge at the Garden City Hotel - where the possessed went to mingle!
What was the name of that disco place near Eisenhower Park on Hempstead Turnpike? Darnit, I can't remember the name.

alot of people don't know this but hot springs is a very, very live night spot.. in the 30's early 40's it was a city where american gangters from across the country hung out and partied at night, lots of clubs were built because lots of people came here, had fun ont he lakes, spas and tracks and partied their ass off. there are probably 5 times more people in little rock but there is probably 5x things more to do at night in hot springs and right outside of it.
