Mahuba: No love for Marketwise? What up with that?

Postby Easy Goer » Fri Feb 08, 2008 2:55 pm

So I'm going through the book and I happened to notice that this guy Marketwise shows up in the dam side of no less than three famous horses of recent memory: Spectacular Bid, Easy Goer and Silver Charm. He shows up in both sides of Silver Charm.

I know it's not unique to see a well known sire appear in the pedigree of a number of champions, but this guy is so unheralded and these ones were such great runners. And he barely gets a mention.

I think he once beat WHirlaway by a nose in the Narragansett Special or something but what else can you tell us about him? Was he better as a broodmare sire?

I think you meant he shows up twice in Spectacular Bid with his 3x3 to To Market. Market Wise beat Whirlaway in the JCGC and set an American record for the distance. He was co-champion older horse in 1943. He ran 3rd in his Derby.

Market Wise was a first-class racehorse and a tremendous natural stayer, but a poor sire, which was a shame. He ran 26 times as a 3yo, winning 11, and was second-rated of his crop behind champion Whirlaway that year and at 4. He was a leggy, light-boned sort with rather upright pasterns and an unusually straight hind leg.

Market Wise sired just four stakes winners, though two, To Market and Wise Margin, were both pretty good horses. To Market was the more important as a stallion, getting 22 SWs including 1963 co-champion juvenile male Hurry to Market and the classy Rising Market.

DDT you are correct on all that, of course.

Two of his sons also won the Mass 'Cap, like him.

I guess my question is; is it possible we will see him appear in the dam side of any future classic winner or are these broodmares no longer appearing?

Also, how does his "triple" feat compare historically? I dont expect you to count them all but how rare is it for a horse like that to show up in the pedigrees of three champions at the fourth remove. (if that is the correct terminology).

I just have no idea if it's somewhat rare, really rare, or nothing much really. Have no idea...

In the sporthorse world, To Market shows up in a tremendous number of pedigrees. He's one of the names to look for.

Big names like Northern Dancer, Mr. Prospector, and so on show up in the further removes of good horses' pedigrees all the time. It just catches the eye when a less commonly found horse shows up in several top horses' peds relatively close together in time.

I'm always surprised at how often I see Al Hattab and Pia Star show up on the dam side of a pedigree.

Even more surprising is to find that Pia Star, a son of Brilliant CDR Olympia, is himself designated a Solid CDR along with the likes of Discovery, Man o'War, Round Table and Sea Bird. Whoda thunk it?

Hi

Although Olympia was an accomplished sprinter, he did win several stakes at a mile and beyond, including the Wood Memorial, and Flamingo Stakes at 9 furlongs.
A look at Pia Star's conduit mare profile of 4-2-8-7-4 (6/11) (0.78) (14-17-19), kind of validates his CDR ranking since it expresses exceptional female family stamina influences.

Found one more classic winner in Mahubas book that has Marketwise: Frans Valentine....

Olympia has a boatload in Mahuba's book. Anyone want to guess?
