Big Knee

Postby mary » Tue Jun 10, 2008 3:12 pm

My friend purchased a horse about a month ago. His friend says she has a scar from what looks to be about 200 stitches around her knee. It is larger than the other but she is sound on it. Any ideas what this could be from?

I bought a filly with a big knee who vetted out as superficial trauma. When I placed her into training she went lame. Sonogram revealed ligament damage. So the moral to the story is unless you have evidence that the soft tissue or ligaments are unaffected, the level of soundness may vary based on the level of physical stress you place on the horse.

Thanks for replying Zinn. This horse has a long old scar surrounding her knee which might be evidence of prior surgery or an injury (put her leg through a fence?). Could the bigness be attributed to scar tissue?

It's possible but without an ultrasound you won't know for certain. But if she is moving sound you might be ok.

You could try a furazone sweat, perhaps that might reduce the size.

Here's a link to a video on sweating.
