New colour Status in the UK PAINTED
Just got Notification from Weatherbys GSB that our mare whatablaze has had her passport changed to Painted as she has large white belly splashes and white roaning all over her coat she is the first adult horse to be changed in the UK the new rule came about in 2008.
A quote from Weatherbys Chief Executive.
‘ In 2008 the International Stud Book Committee (ISBC), which represents the 67 Approved Thoroughbred Stud Books worldwide, decided to add the colour description ‘ painted ‘ to those ISBC Members use to record thoroughbred foals. This decision was made in recognition of the growing number of thoroughbred bloodlines, mainly coming out of the USA, which produce foals which exhibit white markings on their bodies and not just on their head and limbs which is commonly the case. In due course therefore the description ‘ painted ‘ will appear in racecards but in the meantime the Angroves Stud has asked for the colour description of their mare Whatablaze to be altered to ‘ painted ‘. Her passport is currently being changed and our official database updated.’

Ok, so if the UK can add "painted" to a registration cert. and passport, is the USA going to identify our sabino's better? I sure hope so. Right now I'm working with Keeneland about putting something on my two "sabino " yearling's catalog pages that sets them apart from solid yearlings. HELIODORIS is regist. white, no prob there. Just as palomino has now debuted in the sale ring, sabino's need identified too. My ALLA AURORA and ART IN MOTION are registered chestnut and bay and will appear in the catalog as such unless I push to get something added.

By the way, thank you for the update, this may help me.

Is this still correct to call the whites Sabinos? I understood they are dominant white and NOT Sabino.

If the horse comes from a line of dominant white, no I do not think its correct to call them sabino any more.
However if it is unknown whether or not they are dominant white (AA line for example) then i think its ok for them to be called sabino.

To anwser the question you should now be able to register your foals as painted if they have any white on the bodies it does not matter if the patten is Sabino/ splash/ frame/ white/stained or otherwise even our tobianos are going to be allowed in the GSB after we breed 6 more generations of tobiano to pure TB's.
painted means the door is truly open

That is great.
As far as the DW vs a Sabino. I think that calling all the Puchi/Sato line horses DW is going to make no sense to 90% of the buying public. They just do not know what that is yet. So I will still continue to call all my sabino marked horses, sabinos. I will explain to those interested, that they are actually DW but it will take time before more than 50% of the buying public will understand that term. Thoughts?

Blazing colours, I would agree with you in that the dominate white "label" is just too new for most to understand. When I tried explaining it to my vet, she just looked at me with the "I don't get it look."

The only negative point I see against applying the "Painted" nomenclature ALONE is that it has the effect of wrapping-up under a single designation two historical cornerstone coat colors, namely, the "chestnuts" and the "bays". All for the sake of trying to me a little more descriptive.
I would suggest instead applying the terms "painted bay" (pt. b.) and "painted chestnut" (pt. ch.), etc.
But my original suggestion was to officially establish the use of the terms "marked bay" (mk. b.) and "marked chestnut" (mk. ch.), etc.

I have not got my passport back from weatherbys yet but I would assume that the painted then bay would be there. as soon Weatherbys are hanging on to Whatablaze's passport to register her as a broodmare as she due to foal this month i asked them to keep it.
I will check weatherbys stallions on line i was framed as he is now described as painted but I did not notice weather bay was still there.
