Kris And Diesis

Postby Patuxet » Tue Apr 12, 2011 5:32 am

These two full brothers were amazing sires of classic fillies.

Diesis sired three winners of the English Oaks: Diminuendo, Love Divine, and Ramruma plus Pricket which ran 2nd and Sacred Song, 2nd in the Yorkshire Oaks.

Kris sired two winners of the English Oaks: Unite and Oh So Sharp plus Shamshir and Sudden Love which ran 2nd, Rafina which won the French Oaks (Prix Diane) and Hawajiss, 2nd in the Irish Oaks.

One might have expected them also to become important broodmare sires. How have their daughters fared?

Love Divine foaled out the millionaire Sixties Icon, among others.

Diesis is also the broodmare sire of Danehill Dancer, Dylan Thomas, and Lucarno right off the top of my head.

I have a mare that is a 2-o family. From what Ive found the sires that pop off of this line do tend to have more influence through their daughters. Some classic examples are Peter Pan, The Tetrarch and subsquent daughter Mumtaz Mahal and so on to Mah Mahal, Mumtaz Begum that resulted in Mahmoud and Nasrullah. A more modern example was Quadrangle who had daughters Susans Girl, Square Angel, and Smart Angle. Think the 2-o sires have their best influence as support players in pedigrees strengthening the female side either close up or even from 2-3 generations deep.

Last Thursday Roger Lyons, on his blog "Pedigree Matters", noted that the great Galileo enjoys an exceptionally high strike rate with mares by Kris and Diesis.

Paxtuet, in Europe there is a rather exciting young sire, Invincible Spirit, which dam Rafha is a daughter of Kris. Also very strong family on the damside.
BTW Urban Sea's last foal is by Invincible Spirit.

Thanks, erins isle. Indeed he's a stallion on the rise. I look forward to following Born To Sea, Urban Sea's colt by him. He's a 3/4 in blood to Sea The Stars which I saw at Newmarket when he won the Guineas. That day he seemed one of the most perfectly sculpted horses I'd ever seen. I couldn't keep my eyes off him.

Incidentally Rafha, Invincible Spirit's dam, is the same Prix Diane/French Oaks winner I misidentified above as "Rafina". I need new glasses!

Hi Paxtuet,

I thought something like that, never mind. How lucky you are to have seen STW in the flesh. In my country a halfbrother to Rafha, Major Cavelli (2000, Entrepeneur - Eljazzi) ran with success, I believe he later was sold to Russia. Let's hope Born to Sea will do credit to his family!

All the best, Margreet

Margreet:

Sea The Stars showed up unidentified in the Newmarket pre-parade ring along with entries for the race prior to the 2000 Guineas. Even among those older horses he was an absolutely astonishing physical specimen. I'd rank him up there with Buckpasser as one of the most beautiful, perfectly articulated Thoroughbreds I've ever seen. Alas for the sake of comparison I missed seeing Secretariat in person.

My companion that day is a painter of racehorses and the racing scene. He felt Sea The Stars compared favorably with Lammtarra, a particular favorite of his.

Cheers!

Hallo,
the very successful imported sire Dashing Blade (by Elegant Air) stands in Germany at the Etzean Stud.

The German Sire Prunus (by Dark Ronald) stems from the same family, eben his damline obviously didn't survive. Prunus was the sire of Oleander.

regards, Bettina
