Here is Charles Hatton’s description of 1969 Horse of the Year Arts and Letters from the 1970 American Racing Manual. It's filled as well with fascinating details about several other significant horses.

This material really needs to be collected and published in a book. Nobody can write like this today.

Beautiful, descriptive writing. Arts and Letters sounds like nothing we have here today.

I got to meet Arts and Letters when I was a kid. He was very sweet for an old stud. I couldn't believe the groom that told me stories about how crazy his sire Ribot was.

Is there a record of every Arts and Letters type of article that he wrote on other stallions?

And what a disappointment he was at stud. Threw out smallish, cocky common acting yearlings that all needed to be cut. Didn't care for that ill temper in his broodmares either. He threw it. Of course, there were some that were okay, but mostly there is a reason you do not see him much in pedigrees.

Here is a sire with a rare and promising ARTS AND LETTERS presence within his pedigree. His name is ELITE SQUADRON (Chestnut H 2004) http://www.pedigreequery.com/elite+squadron

In addition to Arts and Letters, ELITE SQUADRON is carrying a very interesting ancestress by the name BEYOND THE MIST (Bay M 1967). Take a look at her pedigree:
