His owner (Heinz Steinmann) decided a few years ago to spend more on buying quality horses in Kentucky, rather than continuing to race almost exclusively Swiss Yodeler progeny (who he owned and raced). An amazing turnaround for both owner and trainer. The Swiss Yodelers took quite a hit when the artificial surfaces were installed in Cali, and , not coincidently, have done better since dirt has been returned to Santa Anita.
Hats off to them both, his Creative Cause and now Empire Way are quite exciting 2 year olds.

do you think he would actually stand one of them in california upon retirement?

He has actually stated that Creative Cause will stand in Calif. Of course if he wins a triple crown race and the Breeders Cup the odds of that happening are fairly remote, but one can continue to hope.
