American St Leger

Postby Carlo Algatrensig » Thu Aug 23, 2012 3:15 pm

I've just noticed that it was the inaugural running of the American St Leger at the weekend.

Is there genuine interest for races like this in the US now or is it likely to be an interesting curiosity for a few years and then dropped from the card without much complaint?

I don't think there's enough interest in the U.S. for there to be many races like the American St. Leger but that one race, which fits in perfectly on Arlington Million day, was well supported and will most likely continue to be.

Establishing an American St. Leger may surely sounds like a very
good headstart and it is a fine one, but it seems to me that the most important cornerstone is too preserve and or reinstate emblematic races from the past that were run at classic distances. Do you remember the Washington DC International, the San Juan Capistrano and several other
highly respected events for stayers. There were many other similar events. Unfortunately, now you don't important events run at 1-5/16;
1-5/8: 1-3/4; 2 miles. Some of the gretest Thoroughbreds of all time like
Man O'War, Swaps, Noor and Secretariat raced on those events enroute to their stud careers but now you don't see that. Now when you browse the entries for the longest races available practically all of them are geldings non-top-notch equines.

In synthesis, I agree with the idea of an American St. Leger and other similar events but establishing such a race without creating the corresponding paradigm may be futile. Hope I may be wrong!

Such a race could be a good set up race for a quality American runner seeking to go across the Atlantic and compete with the Euros in the Arc and other races of very high standiing.

Run the race - the one that's really worth winning.

Apropos Joltman's valuable comments now I ask to all:
What racing criteria would you consider as quite appropiate
for a Western Hemisphere Thoroughbred to possess for him
or her to compete successfully (lets say, 1st, 2nd or 3rd.) in
the best races in Europe (like say the Arc)?

Would you say certain winning times in North America?
Would you say certain weight carrying achievements?

Please share your view.

Multiple Graded wins at a mile and a quarter or more on soft or yielding going in competitive fields.
