This same scenario happens all the time in Kentucky. I know of one breeder in Versailles who dug a mass grave then lethally injected his tried-but-failed mares before dozing the corpses into it. Many other horses suffer similar endings.
It's tougher than ever to make a living in the TB business, and becoming more so. Breeders who rationalize their poor buying, mating and selling decisions do so at their own peril.
What happens to poorly-bred TB's with little market value:

Well, Jeff I got a news flash for you. I didn't just bred one horse.
Now serisouly I don't know why you have fits on this forum, but going after people like you are, ain't going to do anything for you. You really need to back off and cool down. There are many people on this site that are sick and tired of your negative comments. I don't mind the good ones, and maybe one of these days you and I can become friends. And maybe you and I can talk about horses in a nice, positive way. One of these days ..................

And I mean this is a nice way. Barcadline didn't say to me " Karenkarenn I am talking about your horses" .
In all the breeding I take my advice from higher up such as the farm that has the stallion. They TELL ME whom to bred to because I ask. I didn't just decide by myself. They know their horses best.
I think if you have a beef with me you need to contact the stallion farm managers and start telling them what you think and to whom their stallions that they know so much about should be bred to. AGAIN I reiterate, I wish that you and I could be friends and I can talk to you about anything. I like the fact that you are becoming more positive, its just I don't like it when you go out of your way to attack people. It's not cool.

I worked on a good sized farm back in the day. We would send our mares to the sale, not the killer sales, but this was before they upped the knockdown price. So how many of our mares ended up with the killers? Maybe karenkaren is right, it would have been better for them to have been humanely put down on the farm than go through that horror.

PS- I have a mare for sale that doesn't have any black type in her 1st dam, but she is a young mare and the family has produced. She deserves a chance, but when she's older, I hope she doesn't end up at the killers.
