Interestingly, 3 of the last 5 years the 23 betting interests in pools 1 and 2 did not identify the Derby winner. That seems to be a trend in that the Derby winners now seem to be making 2 starts. Maybe one in March and then another in April and thats it.
Ill have another---made one start in Feb and one in April. He was identified in pool 1 as one of the betting interests
Animal Kingdom---made two starts in March and was not a betting interest in pools 1 or 2 (he was a field horse in these two pools).
Super Saver ----made one start in March and one in April. He was one of the 23 betting interests in pools one and two.
Mine That Bird ----made one start in Feb and one in March. He was a field horse in both pools 1 and 2
Big Brown-----made two starts in March. He was a field horse in both pools 1 and 2
So in 2008 you won both pools 1 and 2 if you had the field
In 2009 you won both pools 1 and 2 if you had the field
In 2011 you won both pools 1 and 2 if you had the field
The trend is as follows in recent years: Keep your top 3 year old away from the early stakes in January. Run them once in March and once in April or two times in March. Or run them once in Feb and once in March.
The magical number of starts at the age of 3 is 2 starts (at least for the last 5 years it was 2 starts) before Derby day and then wear the roses on the first Sat in May.
I am predicting that somewhere out there is a horse who has not started yet at age 3 and will make his presence felt in the next month or the end of this month and once again in April. Then win the roses in May
