Sleeper stallion in California

Speaking of cheap speed, I believe there's a stallion standing at an obscure farm there who merits some consideration.

BLACK SEVENTEEN ( http://www.pedigreequery.com/black+seventeen )

Winner of the Vosburgh-G1 and Carry Back S.-G2 at sprint distances, he is sired by IS IT TRUE, also sire of the good stallion YES ITS TRUE.

His owners dont often advertise him, and I think he stands near Sacramento at Daehling Ranch, probably for a very nominal stud fee.

He was trained, and is co-owned, by Brian Koriner. Let's just say that Koriner's once-remarkable training statistics have nosedived since the CHRB came down hard on drug abusers. Nevertheless, this horse competed against the best sprinters in New York and Florida and has a shot to make some sort of impact at stud.

Frankly, Im shocked that some Florida speed-freak farm hasn't purchased him for stud duty there. He seems a natural for that one-dimensional market. In California he might help some of the slow mares that have remained there since the exodus began 15 years ago.

Joe hasn't sent a flyer out on him so my guess is not at Daehling. I have been wondering where he was at. Have you checked the ctba website to see which stallions have moved or entered in Ca. or just started at stud?

Wait nevermind I see on the ctba that he is at Daehling but I dont know if he is there or not. Joe hasn't said anything about him.

I wouldnt rely on the CTBA for accuracy on his location, or for much else, either.

I spoke with the horse's owner about him several years ago and it sounded as if the plan was to breed mostly his own mares to him. Hard to believe but true.

He bred only 4 mares in 2012. Bred 9 mares in 2011 (with 5 live foals reported). Seems like a waste of a horse who had a lot of speed and class.

Depends on who they bred him to. Maybe they are concentrating on quality instead of quantity.

Registry shows he was exported but not sure to where.
