Hey All...
Wanted to pass along a mare that I ran across while scouting the CANTER boards. Her name is "Double Talkin" by Talk Nice by Pleasant Colony. Opinions? She seems to be a hard knocking mare..... Any broodmare value? From her pic, she looks quite tired, would love to give her a great retirement home.
Thanks all!
"Double Talkin" Mare on CANTER?

She could be a very nice mare.
She is weak on pedigree but has lots of heart. If you are interested in her I would look up her race record to see what type of races she won. She won lots of races so she is honest and for the price they are offering her at she could make a very useful broomare for someone.

Keith
I was there when her picture was taken. She is a kind, kind mare who really deserves someone to take her home and love on her. In addition, while (as Keith mentioned) her pedigree is not packed with superstars, she was both a tough and a talented racemare. She is an allowance winner and allowance placed.
Here is her CANTER photo:

Her ankle looks bad, as you'll see. Would guess her suspensory is shot.
And here is her pedigree:

If you are local and want to come see her at Suffolk, I'd definitely recommend setting up an appointment with the CANTER volunteers on a Saturday morning (e-mail [email protected] or call 781-354-6291). Double Talkin's trainer can be tough to reach and is hard to talk to/understand on the phone.
Please PM me if you'd like more details. I also have all of the charts for her races as I pulled her record after seeing her - I can't take her myself, but she was one of the ones who just really grabbed me. With some groceries, TLC, and a second chance, Double Talkin will be a wonderful find for somebody!

Well conformationally I have some misgivings about her. She's definitely not a "pretty" mare unless that is a bad pic! . That whole leg (with the swollen ankle) looks bad her pastern and knee look a little puffy too. However, her earnings, and length of service really does give one pause for consideration
Pedigree wise-- for a race broodmare her tail female is really the weakest part of her pedigree. But on closer inspection I found her dam *grandsire* Noble Jay was also the the damsire of international Jumper, Gem Twist. Noble Jay was out of Noble Nurse a daughter of Gallant Nurse who was, in turn out of a mare named Omayya. Double Talkin has line breeding to Omayya through Gallant Nurse's half sister, Pomayya. Another notable hunter sire, Rock Point, has Gallant Nurse/ Omayya in his tail female line.
On to the male portion of her family! Well, Pleasant Colony (Ribot), and Cornish Prince are notables up decently close in her pedigree. There are a few of crosses to The Tetrach/ Roi Herode, on the male side, the same as the above mentioned Gem twist. Another notable plus in her pedigree, actually comes through Pleasant Colony, as his granddam, Flower Bowl is a great granddaughter of Dark Ronald...who was an important contributor to German Classic breeding and a lot of todays top hunter/jumpers have him in their pedigree. This is why Pleasant Colony is desirable in sporthorse pedigrees.
So...on paper she'd look good for someone into breeding sporthorses. Her race record would look good to someone looking for a race broodmare. However, if she threw babies that looked like her marketability might be a problem (again that could be a bad pic). So, we need someone brave enough to try an expirimental breeding...you'd actually have a pretty decent shot at something good so long as a stallion was chosen that could really improve her conformation/looks w/o diluting her athletic ability.
edited to add that it is Pleasant Colony that I was talking about when I said Ribot lol! Ribot still is desirable in sporthorse pedigrees, I love Ribot's myself =D Changed what I said before I did too much damage!

What is the average number of starts contained in her five generation pedigree?
Maybe someone could take another conformation shot. I've seen horses look tremendously different when moved around and photographed a second time. Present photo does leave a lot to be desired conformation-wise...but then, she did hold up to race numerous times...so there must be something right there.

Katydid, thanks for the analysis. To be fair to the mare, I think she would look MUCH better with considerable groceries as well as some attention to that ankle/leg. The picture was taken of her at her absolute worst, I'd have to say. (And it was also taken by volunteer photographers on a miserable day, so the quality isn't, admittedly, the best.)
She doesn't have perfect conformation by any stretch, but I don't think she's a terribly bad-looking specimen if you give her another 100+ lbs. and give her time to recover from that leg injury. She seemed uncomfortable in the stifles too so I don't think the way she is standing in the pic is necessarily indicative of her natural stance and hind end positioning.
One thing the photo doesn't show is that she has a remarkably kind eye and wise expression. Despite being in obvious pain, she seems to have a sort of dignity and intelligence about her that might also tie in to her longevity on the track.
Judging by her race record, the injury is recent and seems to be the only time she's ever been "off" in nearly 7 years of racing. This is one tough, classy mare. Not too many like that these days.

Oh, I am definitely willing to give the mare the benefit of the doubt. I noticed her on Canter, too, and was interested because I have a mare at home that possesses some of the bloodlines I mentioned in the earlier post. You really couldn't ask for a better personality and willingness to please.
I'd give that mare a year off in a pasture somewhere, put some weight on her, get the chiro out to work on her. If she was bought as a broodmare prospect, I'd give her that time off before breeding to really see how much of what we see was environmental influences...rider/trainer, soreness, exhaustion, etc etc.

I have seen 3 Talk Nice offspring. The ones I saw were typical PC.. Big, (mature 16.3 to 17H), plain bay, plain head like this girl. All had huge kind eye, THE best and sweetest temperments, nice big stride. Born Bombproof sorts. One was intended to race but at her ginormous size (ended up 17H) she kept having growth spurt uglies clear through to 4. They gave up on bothering to start her in racing at 4 and sold her as a sporthorse. The other 2 were sold as a weanling and yearling as sporthorses being of the very big and kind sort. If George bothered to market him to sporthorse people on purpose at his affordable studfee I think he could do quite well.
I don't know what happened to Staging Post- by Pleasant Colony- in my judgement he is a really good looking sort- he is small though about 15.3h but built like an out house it is funny though when he breeds he looks like a pony next to our mares! (even the little ones that stick less than him
) his overall look says 'SPRINTER' yet he ran over 1 3/4 miles... I think he must of got his good looks from his Sadlers Wells' dam maybe--- here's hoping next years' foals take on their dam
