Please send some good thoughts for a brave little gelding!

Postby Waquoit » Sun Aug 21, 2005 9:49 pm

Just got a message from the Exceller Fund about a dear little TB gelding named Swangin O'Riley that the EF recently rescued from going to auction (he had suffered a knee chip, his trainer wanted him gone and all other possible avenues for him had been exhausted).

Just days after arriving at his foster home to start his new life, poor O'Riley colicked and had to undergo surgery. Thankfully his prognosis is good - the surgeon was able to straighten out his large intestine, which had twisted, and he is already back up on his feet and doing well. But he has a ways to go. This horse has been through a lot and everyone's good thoughts would be most appreciated!

If anyone would like to make a donation to offset the costs of O'Riley's surgery and after-care, I am sure it would be most appreciated!

How would you go about contributing? A family in Ontario this past winter had a terrible time with several of their ponies and someone set them up a paypal account for donations.

As of Friday, little O'Riley is still fighting for his life. A few days after the surgery, he was doing better, but then it seems a salmonella infection set in. According to the vet, most horses from the racetrack carry salmonella in their systems, but the healthy bacteria in their systems keep it in check.

We are in a wait and see mode if this little guy will pull through or not. Any prayers for this little gelding will surely be appreciated. He has gone through a lot in his short little life, and it appears he has not had a chance to really know a loving home or had a chance to enjoy life.

Update

Postby Yo Tambien » Sat Aug 27, 2005 11:21 am

Sad news - I sent this message to our members earlier this morning:

I am very sad to report that our brave little gelding did not make it. Below is the report that Darlene sent to the Board after speaking with the vet early this morning. It was a very difficult decision, but the vet reported that his pain episodes were getting frequent and he had to be constantly sedated. The diarrhea was not controllable and was debilitating our little horse. We made the humane decision to let him go and be free from pain.

My thanks to all you who prayed for this little guy and who donated for him. The donations will be used to cover the vet bills, and we will be doing some fundraising to cover the expenses as well. The next horse we rescue will be in memory of little O'Riley and what could have been.

From Darlene:
O'Riley has taken a further downslide. He has maybe a 5% chance at best. There really is no recourse at this point- I asked for anything that we could do.. We will have to let him go this morning as he is also getting some pain episodes. The vet said that this is the same decision that he would make for own horse. That is what TEF does, treats each one as if they are our own, so that is what I wanted to hear..

This has been so very , very hard. What a shame. I talked to his care giver, Jane and she said we can take heart in the fact that he was running and bucking and playing with her geldings a few days before this happened.

May he fly high and free with no more pain.

I'm so sorry to hear this- but am glad that, thanks to some caring people, he was able to go peacefully.

Me too certified girl.
At least he knew some kindness even if only for a short time. :(

Rest in Peace O'Riley.
