Point Given as a broodmare sire?

Postby TomFool » Sun Jan 08, 2006 9:30 pm

Would now be a good time to maybe gamble on a couple of young broodmare prospects by Point Given given his such lacking so far as a stallion prospect with his first crop? They can only improve given how bad they have been to this point & should improve anyway given his size. He fits very well what I love in a broodmare sire prospect in being a superhorse & has many bigtime all female influences mainly in his dam with Relaunch, Alydar, Round Table etc. The female side will be there in his mares considering his books. I think now maybe a good time to pick up a couple of well bred 3 year old daughters of Point Given. Thoughts?

Hi TomFool,

In a word - NO.

You'll get a chance to acquire Point Given daughters at reasonable prices for several years unless he 'breaks' out and I don't think that likely.

Point Given was a superior racehorse. Someone on the board and I were discussing his conformation (today) and it's poor. As this person said, "even Tony Leonard couldn't make him look good", (See his Stallion Register photo). I've seen a number of really bad foals by this Point Given - clumsy oafs.

Just because a mare is by a stallion doesn't make her a good broodmare prospect. Perhaps only Storm Bird in recent years has almost any daughter been eligible to be good.

I'd advise looking for decent running, conformed and pedigreed (not special) from Distorted Humor (see hip #2044 in this January sale - and I posted elsewhere about her), and other younger sires before their prices go through the roof. You might also look at Touch Gold who is stalling commercially but has been bred to excellent mares and has a sterling pedigree in his own right.

Remember, every mare is a different case. You need to make sure that the fundamentals are there for nice broodmares no matter what stallion they are sired by.

Good luck,

Pete
