Breeding Suggestions

Postby casper10 » Tue Feb 07, 2006 10:41 am

I have 2 mares and would be greatly appreciative if anyone could provide future breeding suggestions.

The first mare is Pleasant Laur (Pleasant Colony-Incredible Cat, by Storm Cat). She is currently in foal to Mutakddim and I am breeding her to Monarchos this year. In the future I would like to tie in matings involving Bloodroot who she is tail female to.

The second mare is Thunder Reason (Thunder Gulch-Reason to Give, by Alydar). I am breeding her to Chapel Royal this year. The family has worked well in the past by linebreeding to Bloodroot via Never Bend. Bold Reason is her 2nd broodmare sire. Considering she already has 2 lines of Raise a Native, I do not want to add another one. I am also leery about doubling up on the unsound Flitabout/Broadway line.

Being new to the breeding game, I have found the postings on this site extremely educational and look forward to sharing opinions in the future.

Pleasant Colony mares have done extremely well with Seeking the Gold and Dixieland Band. So Mutakddim was probably a good mating. You can get a NG season to Dixieland Band pretty cheap these days (around 30K), so if your mare has an early foal date, I would consider that. Monarchos is a bit risky considering you're breeding on the bubble and he's losing a lot of commercial appeal...

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately she is due in mid-April and she has had slight fertility problems in the past so I would not go the NG route. One of the reasons I picked Monarchos was because his broodmare sire is Dixieland Band. In addition I like the 2 extra crosses of Boudoir (one being another Flower Bowl) and Ribot.

Considering the quality of broodmares send to Monarchos, he is off to a slow start. Since he did not win at 2, hopefully his foals are also late developers.

Casper10....I like your second mare Thunder Reason....much better than the first. I would seriously think about spending the money on a good sire for her, since she has the family it takes to produce a nice allowance winner or Stakes horse for you. :D :D :D
I try not to listen to the voices in my head.
But sometimes they have such good ideas

The tail-female line is the female descendents going back every generation from dam to dam. Thus it would be the dam, 2nd dam, 3rd dam, and so forth.

One of the stallions I thought about for Pleasant Laur is Pioneering. This would provide a 2x4 cross of Terlingua. Any opinions on the inbreeding being to close?
