I'd love opinions on what I would look for in broodmares for 2 very different stallions. I might have free breedings to 2 stallions --
Horse A is NOT blacktype; he ran short & on the dirt, raced until he was 10, came off the track sound, sane & willing to be a riding horse [after earning more than $100k]. He is extremely well-balanced as a riding horse. His bloodlines are through a FL stud -- Rocamadour [IRE] through Grey Sovereign to Nasrullah; his dam is a Native Dancer line mare. [I'm thinking riding horse, but not ruling out sending a baby to the track.]
Horse B is blacktype. He ran long [really long] & favored the turf, although he also ran on the dirt. He is by Kris S.
I have lots to learn. But to start, I have a few specific questions:
1. Let's say I have mares. Conformation aside, what would I look at on each to differentiate which to breed to each horse? [Let me know if you're thinking race horse or sport horse] If it helps, I've got 3 mares in mind -- one is by a Seattle Slew son, out of a Mt. Livermore mare; the 2nd is by a Northern Dancer grandson [not an especially well-known one], out of a Raise a Native mare. The 3rd is by a Conquistador Cielo son, out of the 2nd mare.
2. Let's say I am buying the mares. Any suggestions for what I should look for, to match with each stallion? [Again, are you thinking race or sport horse?]
3. Most important of all -- what questions SHOULD I have asked, that I didn't? [Probably the REAL learning part of this exercise!]
Thanks, all, for sharing your knowledge.

It would be best to breed those mares to proven stallions, as those free stallions might turn out to be also rans.
The blood lines of those 2 mares are a big positive, so you want to breed them to stallions that have a bloodline affinity for their male and female bloodlines or families.

Actually, you're right on the stallions --
One is more of a sporthorse stallion -- he ran a long time, but never in top company. [He's the horse who really is "free" in the sense I already own him & know the risk is it's more likely than not that I'll get a sporthorse rather than a racehorse].
The other is black-type, but he's the more "hypothetical" of the two.
I should have asked the obvious next question --
If not the 2 stallions I described, does any spring to mind? None is blacktype; the 1st mare earned money but had no wins; the 2nd mare has a couple wins & a blacktype full sister & half-brother. The 3rd mare's just now in training to race.
Here is the 1st mare [not the strongest was to get to Seattle Slew, but still there]:

The second mare:

And the third mare:

We've always bred more for show than anything else, so I'm reading books & internet sites & talking to people & generally asking for help & opinions & breeding philosophies.
Thanks -- in advance for helping further my education!
