Reigning Glory and filly update & pics

The continuing saga of Reigning Glory and her courtship with Ocean Terrace at Belle Mere Farm near Norman, OK: The last visit on April 10th, Glory looked like a tank, carrying an early twin pregnancy on cover of Ocean Terrace. The farm management had been unable to separate the embryos to "pinch" one twin, so we decided to abort both and try again. She received Prostin that same day, and was bred again to Ocean Terrace on the 15th. An ultrasound done May 1st confirmed a single pregnancy at 16 days of gestation. May 15th she was retested at thirty days, and no embryo was present. So now we try again.

Since she doesn't get to come home yet as planned, I took a drive and visited her today, and also saw her "beau". A beautiful spring day, and all looked great. Reigning Glory looks very well and happy!

Royal Pacific, age four months tomorrow, is wearing some moth-eaten wooly pajamas, and is becoming much darker than her bay mother; and her beige leg baby-hair is shedding to reveal black on her legs as expected.

Ocean Terrace is a man's man, what we women call a "hunk". He is muscular, authoritative, and has a great body! He's in a great location to combine breeds on a quarter horse ranch, as he will bring nice TB attributes for QH mares. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e347/ ... errace.jpg

There's been some of that going around. One of my new mares (right before we bought her) checked in foal and then open. I wonder it they aren't ultrasounding too early trying to cycle back quickly. Mine got rebred early this week, so I'll cross my fingers for her and Reigning Glory.

Mare and foal look great as does Ocean Terrace. Wonder if you'll get a baby with a belly spot like daddy?

Ah, Belle Mere home of Bully Bullion possibly the smallest quarter horse stallion alive (but he's cute so we'll let it slide )

Something I do as a matter of course -- my vet ultrasounds to see follicles to determine optimum breeding dates... and I write down on the mare's charts any little cysts we find. These can MASK as early pregnancies. The vet will say, "she has a 14 day cyst" meaning there is a cyst the size of a 14-day fetus. Those mares don't get pregger checked until we can see a heartbeat because that's pretty much the only way to tell the fetus from the cyst. If the vet has never messed with that particular mare before, cysts can be confusing.

Thanks for the advice, Madelyn. This is only our second season with her as a broodmare. Last year she was in Texas, and caught on first cover.

Hi, Heidilady. Dee Raper called to say she didn't take on the recent cover. She's been scheduled back to Ocean Terrace once more ; if no baby, we'll pass this year and let her body get set for next year .

Apparently this is a common scenario this year, with mares being pregnant early, then resorbing the fetus . My trainer's farm had seven of fifteen pregnancies resorbed early! I suspect it's due to the drought conditions , and God knows how big or small the foal crop should be. (Obviously better than we do! )

Also, money is tight, and God knows which stud fees are best not spent. I know I was unhappy that Spanish Guitar produced a stillborn filly , but I didn't mind holding on to the $7500 stud fee plus KY 6% sales tax .
