May 31, 1899: Holocauste led into the stretch of the Epsom Derby. A furlong later, he broke down and was shot on the course a short time later.
The starting post veterinarian, Ralph Browne, wrote in a letter to Sportsman that Holocauste was off going to post, and that between two false starts he heard Holocauste's jockey Tod Sloan tell Flying Fox's jockey Mornington Cannon that Holocauste was limping. Browne attributed Holocauste's eventual broken pastern to Sloan's forward-seat "monkey crouch" riding style.
