Owner: 1) John Manners, 1st Duke of Rutland 2) John Manners, 2nd Duke of Rutland
It appears the racing record of Bonny Black has been confused by the GSB and Pick with races run by two other horses of the Duke of Rutland, Ebony (1714) and a mare by Basto (1715), with some of the races of these two mares erroneously being attributed to Bonny Black. She was therefore probably foaled in 1705 (not 1715 per Pick) and her likely true racing record is as follows:-
1708 (as a 3yo) - match Newmarket v Mr Frampton's full aged horse (rec 42lbs); 8 October 1709 (as a 4yo) - Prince's Gold Cup Newmarket (against 6yo mares); August 1710 - King's Plate Hambleton [mares]; 1711 - King's Plate [mares] Newmarket; 10 October 1711 - match Newmarket v Lord Harvey's Merryman (rec 3lbs);
11 Nov 1713 - match Newmarket versus Duke of Bolton's Hackwood; beaten by Old Scarborough Mare [possibly in Apr 1711 in the King's Plate [mares] Newmarket]
The second earliest mare in the lineage of Family 39
3rd dam of Gustavus (1753, 1754, 1755,1756 King's Plates The Curragh)
