On October 22, 1864, a band of confederate guerrillas raided Woodburn Farm, kidnapping Asteroid. Major Warren Viley volunteered to rescue Asteroid, and Alexander asked him to ransom the colt at any price. After a ride of 40 miles or so, he came upon 2 guerrillas. Held at gun point, Viley pleaded with them, saying that the animal was a beloved pet colt. The guerrilla refused, but finally, not knowing the colt's value, agreed to release it for $250.00. Major Viley received Asteroid safe and sound.
