Also known as Pelham's or Marshall's Old Spot, he was probably bred at Selaby by one of the Marshall brothers, John or Richard, and later joined the stud of either Henry Curwen of Workington, Cumberland, or his associate Charles Pelham of Brocklesby Park, Lincolnshire.
