Over 95% of the world's current thoroughbreds trace back in the direct male line to the Darley Arabian through his son Bartlet's Childers, sire of Squirt, grandsire of Eclipse, through which the Darley Arabian sire line extends to the present day. Bartlet's Childers sired many winners and many mares which bred on, and was Champion Sire in 1742.
The Darley Arabian was purchased at Aleppo in Asia Minor and brought to England as a 4 year old in 1704 by Thomas Darley for his father Richard Darley. He stood from 1704 at the Darley family's stud in Aldby, Yorkshire, apart from a season spent with the Duke of Leedes in exchange for a prize bull, until his death, c1730.
He also sired Bartlet's Childers' brother [Flying] Childers, considered the greatest horse of the first part of 18th century, Champion Sire 1730 and 1736 and sire of [Devonshire] Blacklegs (Champion Sire 1746) and Blaze (Champion Sire in 1751 and sire of Cypron, dam of [King] Herod, 8 times Champion Sire); and other winners and highly significant mares which bred on
