Out of fifteen foals in Golden Maxim's 1914 crop, Fencer was one of two who survived - the other thirteen all died in a fire at Blue Ridge Stud in early 1915. (The other survivor was a "slashing big bay colt" out of Notasulga [The Commoner] who was foaled January 13, 1914, but was apparently never named.)
