One of the fourteen horses brought from Barbary by Richard Marshall, Stud Master to King William III. He was given to John Hutton II of Marske, near Richmond, in Yorkshire, in 1700.
Sire of 1) Bowes, ancestress of Tartar (1792 St Leger), Vauban (1867 2000 Guineas), Petronel (1880 2000 Guineas) and Champaubert (1896 Prix du Jockey Club); 2) Sister to Surley, 4th dam of Marske, sire of the great racehorse and sire Eclipse, which perpetuated the direct male line of the Darley Arabian from which over 95% of the world's current thoroughbreds descend; 3) the dam of Victorious (1728 King's Plates Guildford and Lincoln);
4) grandam of [Portmore's] Highlander (1747 King's Plate Ipswich, 1748 King's Plates Guildford, York, Lincoln,1749 King's Plate Newmarket); and 5) Surley, sire of an unnamed mare which is dam of the exceptional racehorse Black Chance (1738 King's Plates Guildford, Salisbury, Winchester, Lewes, Lincoln, and many other races)
