The Queen Mother's association with jumping will be linked most famously with Devon Loch & the Grand National of 1956. Devon Loch jumped soundly, galloped hard & pulled clear of ESB.
The nation cheered as one, but a dozen strides from the line Devon Loch collapsed unable to find his feet. 'That's racing, I suppose,' were the Queen Mother's words. The failure is one of the most famous in sport, but the Queen Mother was dignified in defeat. 'We will not be done in by this. We will just keep trying,' she wrote to her trainer.
Devon Loch's jockey was Dick Francis.
