A crack juvenile, (unbeaten in 7 starts) Friar's Balsam had his three-year-old form compromised by a jaw abscess which he developed in the spring of 1888. The abscess burst during the running of the 2000 Guineas (won by Ayshire), and he finished last as the favorite. He later recovered sufficiently to defeat the Grand Prix de Paris winner, Minting, in the Champion Stakes (now gr. I).
